Hi Guys

Sorry it's been a few days since the last update, I got a bit fed up with the lack of progress and my enthusiasm went a bit flat  :(

I followed thro' all the various suggestions but only found 3 blown bulbs at the back of the instrument panel. No sign of shorting, blackening, melting, smell of burning on the fuse panel or any visible wires  :-/

Spent some time yesterday trying to trace thro' wiring and connectors in the engine compartment. Went back to it this morning and, after about one and a half hours - [size=20]eureka[/size]

Found a broken earth wire which seems to have been trapped by a securing clip. It was concealed by some perishing insulation tape around a small bundle of cables and led to a 6-pin plastic connector secured below the battery shelf. Soldered in a new piece of cable, taped it up, plugged it back in, new 15A fuse in No. 15, turned ignition key and ........

the clouds cleared, the sky was blue, the sun shone, the birds struck up a triumphal chorus, wifey hugged & kissed me and the grandchildren clapped and cheered. All was well with the world.
And the new 15A fuse? .......... [size=16]IT DID'NT BLOW[/size] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Reassembled everything, checked all was working, and went for a spin. All is AOK.

Thanks for all the help, advice, info and encouragement. I really luv u guys  :-*

Hi Mark

Thanks for your suggestions & info.

I don't have front fogs, auto leveling or tow bar so I suppose might as well take the 3 20A fuses out again?

If No. 15 is for 'loads of stuff' is 15A the correct fuse size?

Any tricks for 'popping' the instrument panel out & back in, e.g. a 'How to' on the forum?

Is there a simple piece of kit for ckecking circuit integrity/continuity at each fuse position?

Will try the above in the morning & post findings.

Thanks again.

Hi again, so soon  :(

The title is now inacurate!

Just looked at the fuse panel again to answer Marks question:- No. 16 (dipped beam, which has been working ok) to the right of No. 15, the problem fuse; No. 27 (levelling, which I don't have) immediately above No. 15; & No. 29 (don't know what it's for but the symbol looks like a silencer with a balloon on the right-hand end?).

Anyway, I reset the time & date, switched off then on again and the battery warning light was back on and the instruments at zero again. Damn it  >:(

I checked the fuse panel & No. 15 had blown again, all the others were ok. Back to the drawing board.

Your caution may be right Mark. I'll have to check the back of the fuse panel again much more carefully, but it will have to wait 'til tomorrow now, I've had enough.  :'(

Let you know how it goes.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Blowing fuse - Mystery solved

Hi y'all

Relief & good news to report  :)  :)

I've put this as a new thread as my original (Instrument circuit fuse keeps blowing http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1194358402 ) seems to have gone cold.

After removing the alternator, getting it checked - confirmed ok, and refitting, it was back to square one.

Decided to make close inspection of main fuse panel (behind drop-down flap under steering column).
Removed black plastic panel holding all the small 2-pin fuses, carefully turned it round as far as poss. & checked for loose wires/connections. ALL OK.
Turned back round to refit and noticed three empty fuse positions with terminal connections & marked yellow (20A) (All other empty positions had no terminals).
Secured fuse panel in place, fitted new 20A fuse in each slot and then new 15A (blue) fuse in slot 15, the one which has been the cause of all the trouble  >:(
Turned ignition with some trepidation - dash lights came on as norm. & fuel gauge moved from empty  :o
Started engine ok, all dash warning lights went off, including battery warning light, and ALL electrics worked  ;D ;D
Left engine running for a while and engine cooling fan kicked in - Vwalla!

Those 3 20A fuses must have been absent for the last 4 years yet this is the first blown fuse I've ever had with this car. Still don't know why it happened after all this time and the problem was resolved more by chance than anything else. Still, it is sorted and I'm a happy Grimble again.

Thanks to everyone who contributed. No doubt I'll be back with another question before too long.  ;)

Cheers & best wishes

Hi Guys

My final post on this one.

All is now well, more by chance than judgment.

As an aside at least I've learned how to remove & refit a 'mega alternator & know that it's working fine.

I've posted the outcome as a new item to increase the chances of others with the same prob. finding the solution. Here's the link: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1194627182

Many thanks to everyone who took the time & trouble to make suggestions.  :y

Cheers & best wishes

Hi again

Thanks for your comments VXL V6 and Kevin. I followed Marks guide and removed the alternator with no probs and removed back cover. All appeared ok. Spoke to the recon. guy who said he didn't think the symptoms sounded like an alternator fault and offered to test it for free. Checked out fine. He thinks it's probably a wiring fault.  :-/

I'll get the alt. back on and try a process of elimination starting with the elec. windows as suggested by Marks DTM. Will keep you posted.

Hope to get it sorted before Grimble turns to Grumble  >:(

EDIT: Got alternator back on. Just going to check connections on the back of the fuse board.

Hi Guys

The results are in .....
Battery voltage - ignition OFF - 11.9/12.1v; engine idling - 11.9/12.1v; faster idling - 11.9/12.1v  :(

Verdict: Alternator not working (checked connections etc.). Cost to recon. £55 (could be worse).

Any views either way welcome. Anything to watch out for when removing/refitting alternator?

Best wishes to all.

Hi Kevin

Thanks very much for the info & suggestions. I'll ask my son-in-law if he can test the alternator when he comes to measure the battery voltage. Will post the results.

Best wishes

Hi there, TheBoy, or should it be The Man? Thanks very much for your interest.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your battery voltage question. However, I have just phoned one of my sons-in-law who is an electrician (but not auto). He has the equipment and is coming over tomorrow lunchtime to take the measurements, which I will then post here.

Til then, happy posting! Thanks again.

EDIT: Incidentally, what normal values would you expect?

Thanks also for your comments, VXL V6

Hi, I'm a newbie to the site and came across it while searching for electrical info. re. my '96 ED Select 2.0l (8v) petrol estate (nearly 250,000 miles!).

I've had very few probs but this electrical one has me totally con-fused.

Problem:
Dash instruments, including speedo, all at zero; elec. windows not working; engine cooling fan not working.

History:
Accelerated away from a junction, heard a 'pop', instruments went to zero  :-/
Thought must be a fuse blown. All lights, wipers, horn and elec. windows (at that point) still working so continued home.
Elec. windows then did not work.
Found blue 15A fuse (No. 15 on main panel under steering column) had blown.
Replaced with new 15A fuse. Instruments and windows worked initially but then stopped. Fuse had blown again. Same with a 20A & 25A.
Noticed this morning engine cooling fan not working either.
ALL other fuses checked and are ok. Battery is fully charged although battery warning light is 'ON'.

Could it be a relay? If so which might it be?

All helpful suggestions gratefully received. Even humorous commiserations may ease the frustration.  ;D

I await your words of wisdom and correction.

Thanks for your replies guys.

chrisgixer, do you mean 'pump' or is there another meaning to 'bump'?

Jimbob, how do I find and check the core plug?
Roughly how much is a new one?

Thanks again.

Omega General Help / Water leak - 2.0 ltr 8v
« on: 24 August 2009, 14:41:13 »
Developed water leak about a week ago. Rate of loss gradually increased. Had it up on front ramps and leak appears to be coming from just behind top of oil filter. No sign of water from anywhere higher up or from any visible hoses or pipes.

Water leaks freely even when engine not running and header tank filler cap off, i.e. cooling system not pressurised.

No evidence of mixing of oil/water.

Could it be a gasket or even the water pump? Are there any tests to eliminate/confirm without having to remove.

All sensible suggestions gratefully received.

Omega General Help / Re: Intermitent not starting
« on: 28 August 2008, 22:14:34 »
Hi guys

Here's the latest. Found the culprit - fuel pump caput!

Perry's, main dealer, wanted £185 for new pump, 2 days on order.
Local Discount Motor Accessories - £120 for genuine new Bosch pump or £98 for after-market replacement, within 1 hour.

An hour's work to remove old pump, fit new one and reassemble. Started first turn. Job done.

Hope this helps anyone with same prob.

Best wishes, Graham

Hi guys

After more than 2 months of trouble-free starting the problem is back.

I have swapped the chip between both keys but no joy – engine turns but no sign of life (tank quarter full). I feel that the immobilizer is not being disarmed when the key is inserted/turned. Can the immobilizer be disabled in any way to see if this makes any difference? If so, how?

Suggestions gratefully received.
