Omega General Help / Re: Head Gasket
« on: 19 February 2008, 10:16:12 »
Exactly my point. A problem like this could happen whether a car has had a ‘good’ service history or not. It happened to mine and the HD’s were the problem. Whatever the cause of failure it now runs like a dream again. I have only had to change the HG on a car once previous and that was on a an old MkII escort about 20 years ago! That had no service history, I quite miss that car very simple to work on. I think it took about an hour to do the HG! :)

Forgot to add, it sounds like your car needs its HG's doing by the discription of the symptoms! :y
Change pump and timing belt, rollers etc at the same time.

"3) While I agree with mr LooKnee that HG failure is rare on the V6, I have seen it happen twice (on badly maintained cars) and strangely it's always been the passenger side one that's gone."

My head gasket went on my 2001 2.6.  The car has a full MD service history and the gasket went at around 56k. A cloud of white smoke at start up, white smoke under heavy acceleration and exhaust in the coolant. Once removed, both off to be sure, I looked at the gasket and head  and you could see a slight scorch and a ‘channel’ where the water was escaping. It was very minor but was causing the coolant to burn off and all the other problems associated.

It maybe rare but this can happen to any car, regardless of maintenance. It is a perishable item after all so please do not be blinkered just because it is rare for it to happen or it only happens to thrashed poorly maintained cars, it doesn’t.

Omega General Help / Re: Model Verification

Sorry forgot to mention.
Do not worry about buying private,. All the blab bla about buying from a garage equals piece of mind with a warranty is pants. Garage complains are on the up and buying a personal warranty is easy. I bought my 2001 2.6 CDX last June and just before christmas it started to use coolant. I phoned my warranty company up, warranty direct, and they said take it to a garage. I did this and had a full top end rebuild, head gaskets and timing belt kit. I only paid for the timing belt kit and fluids, can you imagine a garage forking out for this sort of repair without protest 5 months after purchase?
Anyway this is way off topic, I just wanted to say people can buy private with confidence and save a lot of money.

Hello,
Just a thought. Was the price the dealer quoted a trade value or part exchange value? There is a difference, part ex-values, found in parkers guides etc, are always higher than trade values. Look up on line to get an indication of the value of your car then at least you will know if he is trying it on. If he can’t find the exact model of car in his black book  then the closest to it should be fine, and ask to see it, if he refuses to show you thank him for his time and walk away.
It sound like he didn’t want to do a deal. Best thing is to find a private sale price for your car, advertise it, sell it and buy a new car in cash. With the cash in pocket you will find a bargain, especially private sales.

Omega General Help / Re: REAR WINDOW DE-MISTER
« on: 20 December 2007, 16:09:41 »
Yes the rear window clears if i'm on a run because the aircon clears it.
I just wish I could press the button and the screen clears, like in my wifes car, her's take a minute to clear!
I shall do some checks tomorrow morning and see if a wiggled wire will help,.........mmm

Thanks for the clues!
The rear window de-mist's evenly but never clears fully. I shall check the connectors under the parcel shelf and the fuse for it. It does sound like though it could be one of those things to live with, I'll check connections first before I get too dispondant!

Omega General Help / REAR WINDOW DE-MISTER
« on: 20 December 2007, 11:42:42 »
Hello again-
I was hoping that one of you on here may have had this problem and rectified it.

My rear window de-mister is rubbish, it works slightly. After about 5 mins you can see it starting to de-mist. I think that the mirrors are linked to the de-misting switch and they too are slow, but not as slow as the rear window.

Also when I turn the de-mister on I get an interference through the radio, like a crackling noise.

It’s important that I can de-missed at this time of year, any clues?!?

Omega General Help / Seat Backs-How to take off!
« on: 19 December 2007, 13:15:10 »
Hello-Just a quick question.
How do you take off the seat backs to the driver & passenger seats. I have had a brief look but could not see any screws, do they just pop off?
I need to oil the springs to stop the squeaking!
The seats are from a 2.6 CDX.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, ok i shall try that. It does sound like the noise comes from the side restraints though.

Oh I see. They are electric & heated put standard seats. I wish that the squeak would go, I am thinking of a PTFE spray and trying to spray the inside of the seats. I know its a small problem but it is annoying

I have a 2001 2.6 CDX Velour trim.

Why does it make a differance? I must have the squeaky 2001 seats, which is odd because there is not a trim sqeak or rattle anywhere else in the car, just those seats....
