Omega General Help / 2.5 v6 Oil Pressure

I am a newbie. Please excuse if this question has already been answered previously. I have an omega 2.5 V6 1999 (S) purchased in June 2007, 98K on clock. Recenctly the oil warning light came on and as a precaution I contacted the AA 
Technician came and advised that the oil pump had probably gone as there was some top end noise. However, the light is now intermittent and runs fine for a short while and then the light comes on and the top end noise re-appears. It can clear itself and quiet down again although it is obvious there has been some wear as it is a little noisy at the top end. AA man said about a grand to get replacement engine fitted. Car has just passed MOT and I am not in a position to re buy. Any advice would be appreciated but please be gentle as I have had to use public transport for the past week
