Omega General Help / Re: Pots 2 & 5 not firing
« on: 31 May 2010, 22:56:53 »
OK, please bear with me folks as I am communicating with my mechanic over miles of land line. I read on this Forum that the Omega ECU is pretty robust so I decided to take this as gospel and get my mechanic to do some further tests. I asked him to connect a small 12V bulb between the Diss Pack connector pin 4 (12V) and pin 1 and simulate via his computer software firing on that line. The bulb lit and he conducted the same test on pin 2 and then again on pin 3. Each time the bulb lit and has restored most of my faith in the ECU. Re-connecting the new Diss Pack, it still refused to spark on pots 2 and 5 and even failed when he drove the same input from a known working ECU output. This pointed to the new pack being faulty which was further reinforced by substituting the old original pack which now seemed to drive pots 2 and 5 but not 1 and 4. So the fault appears to be both Diss Packs so we are going to replace the new one under warranty and try again.
It's crazy to think that my car was running reasonably well on cylinders 2,3,5 and 6 with one pack and cylinders 1,3,4 and 6 with the other. Hopefully we will soon get the car sorted without having to change the ECU, I thought that it would be a good idea to describe the simple bulb test as it may help others.

Many thanks Omegafantasy, looks like another ECU then, would have made a bit of sense though to have had an external driving pack. Probably a power semiconductor in the ECU has gone down.

Cannot say about the plugs as the car is not with me but with a friend some miles away.
I have read somewhere that there is an amplifier unit between the ECU and Dis Pack that can cause failure of Dis Pack pairs to work. Can anyone confirm this?
If true, do you know where it is located?

For an update on this, my mechanic tells me it is pin 1 of the Dis Pack connector that is missing a  signal. The car evidently starts well, idles nice and drives fine with both leads disconnected from pots 2 & 5. I have to ask myself how long this fault has been there and not noticed. I thought the car was pretty quick, goodness knows what it will be like if we can get the HT on every pot. Strange that nobody else has had this fault or maybe, like me, they don't know they have it  :)

Omega General Help / Pots 2 & 5 not firing
« on: 28 May 2010, 22:48:23 »
My 2.5 V6 was running poorly and the plug wells filling with oil. Replaced all gaskets and O rings, cleaned breathing system, replaced plugs and HT leads and then found crack in Dis Pack so replaced this as well. Still not running as good as it should but computer diagnostics said all was fine. Found no spark on Pots 2 & 5 and so tried the old Dis Pack, still the same. Dis Pack connector has 4 wires, Black (common), Grey, Yellow and Red. A signal is present on Grey and Yellow but not Red. Traced wiring back to ECU and all OK. So is it the ECU or perhaps one of its inputs like the flywheel sensor, assuming it has one. Any thoughts? No fault codes from ECU, it says all is fine.
Anyone have a spare ECU I could buy/borrow to prove where the fault is?
Any help/suggestions welcome, Les

Omega General Help / Re: Central locking problems 2001 omega
« on: 10 May 2010, 00:34:00 »
I have a similar problem, battery has gone flat but key will not open any door probably due to deadlocks being engaged. Any ideas on how I can get into car?

Yeah! Sorted. I opened the boot (Thank goodness you still can while the other doors are deadlocked) and connected a spare battery to the boot light +wire. Enough electrics to open car with remote, thought I would put this up in case others have a similar problem.

Omega General Help / Re: Water loss
« on: 19 March 2009, 00:45:52 »
I just recently had this problem, topping up every few hundred miles but more frequently if I used the right foot more often than usual. Then suddenly the "Coolant Level" warning came much sooner, with steam clearly seen on the right hand rear of bonnet. A jet of hot coolant could be seen shooting from the HBV at high revs. When the engine was made accessible for the HBV replacement, it was soon evident that the jet was in fact coming from a 2mm slit in the lower pipe attached to the HBV.
On my Omega this was a short pipe carrying the clearly marked part number 90466229 but a replacement was much too long. It was later confirmed that these shorter pipes were incorrectly marked and should carry the correct part number 90466222. So be careful if you have a similar leaking pipe as quoting the number printed on it will get you the wrong replacement part :y The HBV was changed at the same time as a small hairline crack could be seen on one part of it.
I was quoted £250-£300 for replacement of the HBV + Parts  :o with the guy saying "It's a long job, we have to strip down all of the engine or maybe remove it to do the work". My trusty mechanic friend acquired all parts for under £25 and took him about an hour to fit  :D
Moral of the story? Yes, suspect the HBV but watch out for any failed pipes attached to it as well.

P.S. Length of the 90466222 pipe is 280mm when stretched out from its tight curl.

Oh! And find an honest mechanic ;)

Omega General Help / Re: Bad engine misfire after warm up.
« on: 19 January 2008, 19:38:41 »
Usually get that smell when Cat is new, my Cat certainly gave no warning of blockage except for the bad running of the engine. Sometimes it would not be too severe but at others it was really bad, car could not get up steep hills! The Lambda sensor is placed before the Cat so its removal allows some of the exhaust gases to escape through the threaded hole.
Enough to maybe prove if the car is now working better, it will be quite noticeable albeit a little noisy  ;D. If car runs a lot better then suspect blocked Cat. The Lambda sensor may be a bitch to remove, it seems easier to shift if the exhaust is warmed up a little first.

Just wondering if this is related to my old Carlton fault, lovely idle but no guts from then on, really lumpy and no speed. Did a full service and checked everything you can think of (ECU, sensors etc.) and found no fault so we removed the lambda sensor and car ran better with the hole unplugged. So we checked the Cat and found it virtually blocked. Temporarily removed Cat and car went like a dream. Might be worth a check if you can't find anything else wrong and need a straw a grab!

Omega General Help / Handbrake mechanism change
« on: 27 January 2008, 18:44:52 »
Hi, Has anyone had to change the handbrake mechanism inside the car? It is a 2.5 V6 Omega CDX and the metal work has fractured on one side of the lever. It appears to be held in place by two bolts, accessible after removing the console. Just asking the question in the hope that maybe someone has done this job before and I wonder if it is just an in car job or an underside chore as well?
Cheers, Les

Newbie Welcome Area / Hi everyone
« on: 22 December 2007, 18:36:27 »
Had quite a few Vauxhall cars in my time, Viva HB and HC, Astra 1200, Cavalier 1600 and a Cavalier 2L sri. Recently a Carlton Diplomat (same engine as sri but nothing like the poke) and now have an Omega 2.5 V6 CDX.
Home is Watford, Hertfordshire, I hope to get to some meets. Just look for the old geezer with white hair, maybe some of you know me from the cruise scene, was photographer for CruiseQuest and had pics published in Redline.
All the best everyone for 2008.
Les
