Omega General Help / what to do with my gearbox?
« on: 14 December 2008, 15:47:23 »
hi folks,
way back in christmas last year, the gearbox in my 2.6 V6 Automatic seemed to stop working (no drive), i got a replacement gearbox, got it fitted, and...... still no drive. could have been an electrical problem?

anyway, i never got round to fixing the car, but some bloke who needed parts gave me a decent offer for the non-runner.

I now have a (presumably working) gearbox & torque convertor in my garage - i was looking for advice, could i sell it? is it worth anything? how about scrap value?

dont want to sell it and it doesnt work for the buyer!

it cost me about £150 for the one from the breakers, could i get £50 for mine?

 :) merry christmas  :)

ok i have went out for a look - nothing at all coming up at all when the key is turned... thought maybe the battery needed a boost after 5 months  sitting in the drive -will give it a charge up and see if that works, will post up any results i get.

thanks for the tip  :y

Hi folks,
looking for a bit of advice on the best way forward, heres my sob story........ Ive got a 2.5 V6 Auto Estate, its R reg which makes it a 97 i think. just over 100k.

I really love this car, its so comfy to drive, smooth engine, can honestly say the best car ive ever had....until christmas day last year, going up a hill and suddenly power was slipping away, appeared to be some sort of problem with gearbox.

cos it had happened on a hill, i thought maybe the transmission fluid needed topped up. went to a garage, they checked the level, and it was a little low. this was topped up but the problem kept happening occasionally, slow to pull away, and struggling on hills.

As the car was only worth about £800, i didnt want to pay a transmission specialist in glasgow big money to check out the gearbox, only to need a new one (more big bucks), so i got a working gearbox (& matching torque convertor) from a breakers ( was definately working when donor car brought in, and was about 20000 miles younger!) got a local mechanic
to fit it.

suprise surprise, didnt make any difference - seems its not a gearbox problem!  :'( felt like crying at the garage as im so very skint, didnt need this problem! maybe something electrical. is the real problem.

By this point i was desperately needing a car for work, so bought a run-around, and the Omega has sat in my drive for 5 months, had to SORN it, its really depressing me now. I have the first gearbox as well, in the boot.

If you are still reading !?, what should i do, try and sell as spares / repair, or scrap it? i dont really have the time to break it. it would really depress me to scrap it as its a really great car, with two gearboxes! would rather see it go to someone who could get use out of it, but is anyone likely to buy it???

sorry for the long email - would appreciate any advice.

Omega General Help / replacing my gearbox
« on: 08 January 2008, 20:51:01 »
hi all, hope someone can help me here...

I have a 2.5 GLS auto estate (98)

i discovered that the transmission has been running dry for some time (i havenet had the car long), just recently, after going up ateep hill the transmission warning light came on, and it has been very slow and sluggish pulling away.

I immediately suspected low transmission fluid, and topped this up, but it has made no difference (fluid is leaking out all over my drive).

Since i dont know how long its been running dry or if the bands are scorched/stretched/ damaged, i have got hold of a second hand working gearbox which i am going to swap.

Can anyone advise of any seals/gaskets/sundries that should be changed at the same time, so that i can have them all bought in advance.

many thanks in advance! :)
