I have a rather puzzling battery issue. In December I tried to start my 2000 MV6 that I hadn't used for a couple of weeks but the battery was flat. I assumed that because there had been some cold weather and it was the original battery it was just age so I bought a new replacement battery.

This was fine for a month until I realised that the battery was flat again. The battery light had not been coming on so I did not suspect the alternator. I took it around to my local garage and they ran some tests and told me that they could not see any faults and that it was probably just down to my driving habits (very short journeys in cold weather). The drain on the battery was what would be expected.

On monday I experienced the same problem with a flat battery. Fortunately I now have a battery charger so I can make sure I keep it topped up but this isn't a long term solution.

What tests can I do to check that the alternator is charging the battery? The garage I took it too seem to have missed something and they are usually very reliable so when I take it back for service and MOT next week I would like to get them to look into it again if possible (unless of course it is simple and I can fix it myself).

I had the same problem a few years back and it was the dispack that needed changing.

The garage were shocking. I eventually found the answer through the ABS forum and called the garage to let them know

I just did the paper clip test and I got a code 19 as you all suspected.

Hi Chaps

My Omega (registered March 2000) developed a worrying problem today when I was driving along the M9. First of all there was a problem when the the engine very briefly cut out (literally for half a second) but came back on again. A few minutes later as I was exiting the motorway the engine cut out completely and would not restart. I waited a couple of minutes and as it would still not start I called the rescue service. The rescue truck turned up after around half and hour and the mechanic asked me to try and start again so he could try and get an idea of what was wrong. Anyway, the car started first time. I was a bit embarrased!

I got some information from TheBoy about doing a papercip test and chances are that I would receive a code 19. However I have read the instructions and it says that this only covers models up to 1999. Is this correct and if so is there a way to find out if my crankshaft sensor is faulty without going to a dealer?

Mind you, I am not very technical and the paperclip test looks a bit complicated

Hi

First of all a bit of background info. I have a 2000 MV6 that I got in August 2002. It was originally in the service of Thames Valley Police so it had been around the block (the M25   ) a bit before I go it. It has been a great car with only a few minor problems outside the usual servicing of the parts that normally need replaced after a few years (exhaust, plugs etc). It has now passed 157k and it is generally going strong.

I have just ordered the Haynes manual for my MV6 but as I am a complete novice can anyone recommend a more general car mechanics book that I could get to give me the background on what I need to know before (basic tools to buy etc).

Please be gentle with me - everyone has to start at the beginning
