Hi, I have a dashboard warning light that I am advised shows a gearbox code.  No lights showing on gearbox, except the correct light for gear selected.

If my engine fires up first time, no problems, but if it doesn't fire up immediately, it's like it is in "limp home" mode, but switch engine off and start again (as long as it fires up immediately) then all ok.  It drives superb when selected ok.  Car has just done 75k, I've had the g/box oil checked and it checked out ok, but it was topped up.

Could it be an engine or gearbox sensor ?

Any advice would be much appreciated ;)

Hi Folks,

Just thought I would give you an update, car is fixed now, after replacing EGRV, but it was the Maff Air Flow sensor £30+ on e-bay  :'(

Not bad for a £1300+ layout (£500 Vx, £800 Independant including Head Gasket replacement which blew !), at least the independant garage sorted it for me, theres no way I'm going back to Vx again ever, but it is damn nice having my fave car back again, it's been running rough for 5months now.

Anyway, thanks for all of your comments and help, I hope I won't have to come back too soon, but if I have to, you will be the my first port of call. CHEERS gazzaw  ;D

Cheers guys, it is a 2.2 and I have found an independant who seems to be very genuine, I live in Chadderton Oldham, which is North Manchester.  It isn't losing water(now I've had the head gasket replaced !), I'll take it into him on Tuesday with a copy of all of your comments, he knows I'm on here and he's happy to resolve the issue for me, he will take them in any order I want.

The car has improved over the past couple of days, it is still horrible on startup, runs like its firing on one cylinder, then after 3-5mins on tickover, settles down and runs quite well, but with low power and surges, then runs quite good, showing the engine itself is fine, just something strangling it.  It even pulls well from time to time, but only if you floor it.

Why when its on tickover and lumpy as hell, does the power assisted brakes not work properly ?  This happens everytime, but once, even when I set off from our house up hill but slowly, so running (ok ish), got to a junction after 100mts and brakes were non-existant, but fine after that ?

The car has had two new bumpers recently, after two minor knocks, the car has full vsh, only 68k miles, is abs mint inside and out no dents and no body panels replaced and I got offered £750 p/ex without them knowing about engine probs !

I'm not getting rid, the car is gorgeous has passed it's mot 1st time for the last three years and handles superb, going to France twice, Dorset three times and Wales five times, all of the brit holidays, towing our rib. It has never let me down and I've still not found anything to replace it and I'm a car nut.  Funny how you get attached to cars init ?  :D

I'll let you know how it gets on after egrv replaced and I will ask him to check the cam sensor first.  I replaced cam sensor on our MV6 estate, but symptoms totally different, but he will check it out for me. :y

Hi,

I will have to go back to the garage for the codes, will get back to you on this.

btw when i start the car from cold, it "pops" small explosions in the manifold or downpipe of the exhaust.  With my limited amount of knowledge, this requires a rich mixture, which if it is missing it will have, but doesn't it require clean air ?  Does this suggest egrv stuck ?

Hi Elite Pete,

Sorry, forgot to mention EM codes show several different problems, even when cleared and light just come on, from low voltage to o2 sensor (again), the independant garage who fixed the Head have tried to resolve, but there are so many problems showing up he doesn't know where to start ! It shows a minimum of 5 different codes which doesn't point to any one thing.

Hence my visit here, I thought I would try the old fashioned experience thing rather than a bl**dy computer and I'm an IT Manager  ;D

Omega General Help / Lumpy at start No power stalls EM Light on

Hi Folks,

Got a 2.2 Saloon 65k, had 3.0MV6 and loadsa Carltons, love em to bits  :y

Car starts really lumpy, will not pull away till left for 3-5mins to warm up, then v.low on power, will not pull up hill 15-20mph max and stalls on its own !!!!!

Vx told me o2 sensor had gone, £250, then its the other o2 sensor, another £100, then rocker cover gasket letting oil fill spark plug recesses causing shorting out, then manifold gasket, then head gasket, which had just gone, another £850 :-/, because i've run it back to the garage so often.

Could it be the egrv ? OR
iv been running tesco cheap cr*p for sometime and have just read bad reports ?

Just read on an astra site that all of my symptoms have been put down to o2 sensors, coils, egrvs, breather pipes, faulty ecus, but replacing faulty egrv seemed to be the most common.

I don't wanna get rid, coz the car is immaculate and I just love how they drive, please stop my missus avin the excuse to give me grief about keepin my pride and joy shes had 4 Carltons and Omegas including MV6 auto estate she shud be more sympathetic  :'(
