Okay thanks.

Not much I can do if timing cover is leaking.

I suspect egr connection to plenum chamber. Looks as if oil is dripping into airflow behind radiator and blowing back onto alternator and generally getting spread around by turbulance. Connector hose is very hardened.

Also stripped thread on the front hose clip. Anyone know where to source a similar clip? Not a Genuine part but a generic clip of correct size. Screwfix, B & Q or somewhere similar?

Thanks, mc9

Omega General Help / 2.5TD leaking oil onto auxilliary belt
« on: 05 May 2015, 17:56:40 »
Have a curious oil leak in vicinity of alternator, spraying onto front of alternator, top of belt and top-left corner of rad. can't see where it's coming from with engine running.

It's typical used black engine oil colour and smell, so don't think it's water, ATF, PS fluid or anything other than engine oil.

Any ideas?

Thanks, mc9

Omega General Help / 2.5TD aircon regas
« on: 22 July 2014, 19:38:28 »
Aircon isn't cold anymore (in this heat - phew). Had car for five years and never serviced ac, so probably needs recharging.

Halfords regas kit, or is it easier to get a Kwik Fit regas for £45?

It's too hot to do it myself  :)

More information on this fault.

Speedo and rev counter sometimes stop working. After starting car they don't work for the entire journey but no fault lights are on. Come back to car after a stop and they work again.

Gearbox is sometimes reluctant to change gear -- refuses to change down on hills and wants to hold a higher gear at a constant 30mph. Gears can be changed manually.

There are no fault lights on for ABS or anything else. Does this car (1998 2.5TD CDX) have ABS?

Is this a gearbox intermittent speed sensor fault? Would explain gearchange misbehaviour and no speedo / rev counter maybe?

Thanks for that Shackeng, but I will retire the car. Sounds like the car has reached the end. Time to buy a replacement.

ATF was replaced about two or three years ago. Box has always had a tendency to slip out of gear, fixed by raking selector lever. I assumed this was caused by a faulty selector quadrant.

car is a bit tired now, so probably retire it rather than repair.

Omega General Help / 2.5TD (1998) auto box
« on: 16 April 2014, 19:35:58 »
Telephone call from wifey: "Help, The car won't pull away up our hill". Luckily, not far from home and I was able to drive it home.

Car was hot after a 200 mile journey.

Gearbox is slow (about 1 to 2 secs) to engage D when stationary and makes a nasty grindy vibrating noise until engaged. I don't know much about auto boxes but is a clutch band going wrong? Or something else?

Car is needed for Scotland trip in just over a week.

Assume the gearbox is a BIG problem, possibly terminal?

Can anyone advise?

Thanks, mc9

Which is GP relay? Pulled relay 40 (upper left corner) and the engine stopped.

Using Occam's razer, assume alternator is bugggered (I know the battery is good). I can see it, but I don't want to change it myself -- suppose a competant independant garage could do it easily.

Is this a service exchange part -- any recommendations for a good exchange?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / 2.5TD not charging
« on: 07 September 2013, 20:35:17 »
Fully charged battery voltage 12.7V, engine off.

Engine running 2000rpm, battery voltage still 12.7V.

Looks like alternator has failed but no dash battery or charge warning lights are showing. Any other known cause of failure to charge battery?

Is alternator replacement difficult or expensive?

Omega General Help / 2.5TD steering noise
« on: 14 July 2013, 14:52:35 »
Ticking or rattling noise when turning steering wheel slightly left or right, car stationary.  Steering wheel oscillates in sync with noise. Hard to tell but noise is somewhere near steering fluid reservoir. Fault is intermittent and not always present.

Anyone know what's wrong? Can I expect an expensive steering pump failure?

Thanks, mc9

Omega General Help / 2.5TD (1998) auto box troubles
« on: 05 May 2013, 22:55:37 »
The car occasionally struggled to move off today. Engine reving but car moving off very slowly. Not a permanent fault and seems okay now. Is this the "creep home" mode I've heard about (but never experienced so far)?

The car has had a tendancy to slip out of gear for some months. again it's an intermittent fault, cleared by moving selector lever while driving.

Read somewhere about "common problems" with this auto box. On the "hoping it's a simple problem" principle I've disconnected the battery to clear any computer related faults (will reconnect tomorrow after applying refresher battery charge overnight).

Another common problem appears to be a dirty or intermittent gear selector lever, fixed by cleaning the switch.

How do I clean the switch?

Batteries are just strange. Our 2.5TD will got for weeks without problems, and then for no apparent reason get a dead battery. Wifey *claims* she hasn't left any loads on. I've put a new battery on to see what happens. And keep the old one charged with the CTEK.

I have an Optimate4 for bikes and CTEK MXS 5.0 for cars (also has motorcycle mode).

Use Optimate on bikes only.
Use CTEK on both.

Batteries seem to be okay with this maintenance regime.

Both lamps have identical beam patterns so I guess the bulbs are seated properly.

What are these "aluminium adjusters" of which you all speak? What are they for? Do I need them?

Okay thanks, not a job for me then.

Yep, they are projector beams. A case of newer technology being an *improvement* on an older technology perhaps?  :-\
