is it possible to get runflat tyres for the omega? i know some of the newer high end cars (bmw merc) have them as an optional extra. These tyres even when punctured retain their shape allowing you to get the car to a convient place for a repair, though i do think your speed is limited to 50mph when flat, though i may be wrong.
Not sure on laws for retrofitting, but factory fit, there is a legal requirement for electronic tyre pressure warnings....

Two problems that I can foresee here - First, it's going to be a VERY expensive option replacing four tyres with runflat ones, and secondly (as TB said) how would you know they were flat without some sort of pressure warning device?

Thanks guys....

I don't want to compromise interior space, since I often have to carry a wheelchair etc - So it looks like my only option is the tank which fits into the spare wheel well....

That leaves me with the problem of the spare wheel - Or rather the lack of one! The last time I tried these tyre weld products (admittedly more than 20 yrs ago) they were crap!! And since I carry my disabled daughter, it worries me not having a spare wheel...  Have these products improved to the point where it's feasible to run without a spare? Or is there a kit to mount the spare onto the tailgate of an Omega estate (is that even possible)?

Omega General Help / LPG Conversion?

After I buy an Omega, one of the first jobs on the list will be getting it converted to use LPG.... I hope to buy an estate, so what tanks are available, and where do they fit exactly?

I've heard of two - One that sits in the spare wheel well, and one that runs across behind the rear seat.... But that gives a problem - If using the first type, where the heck does the spare wheel go? I don't just want it dumped in the back of the car! And the second type of tank also presents a problem as it limits the use of the car to carry longer items with the rear seats folded down....

Am I missing something here, or are there other alternatives?

Thankyou, that's great - As I said it will be 6-12 months before I buy a car, I still have 12 months to go with my current lease hire vehicle, so there's no point in buying a car right now just so it can stand around doing nothing!

I'm after an estate, probably a V6 - Trim level isn't that important, the main priority is to find a car with excellent bodywork that is as reliable as possible. My budget is around £4000.

For my own peace of mind, a cambelt/tensioner/waterpump change would be the most likely first job, so an idea of cost for that would be appreciated - Obviously via a PM, I don't expect (or want) you to discuss such things on an open forum. It also appears that a bit of travelling will be involved to find the right car, so I'd also like an idea of how much you would charge to inspect a vehicle assuming it could be upto 100 miles away, so it's not a quick pop round the corner to look at it!

Omega General Help / Maintenance?

Hi Guys,

I'm probably going to buy an Omega in the next 6-12 months, but I wondered if there was anyone in the north east (I'm near Middlesbrough) who would be prepared to do the normal mechanical/electrical maintenance for me - Obviously I'm happy to pay, I just don't want to pay extortionate dealer type prices!

The reason I ask is that after three lots of spinal surgery, my days of crawling around under cars are long gone!

So I need someone whose competent with Omegas, or a recommendation for a decent small garage that won't charge the earth - Would anyone be prepared to help, or recommend somewhere?

I'd also like to find someone reasonably local who would be prepared to look over any potential purchase - Again, I'd pay for you time. I don't expect something for nothing!  ;)

I'm afraid that I'm now of an age where sound quality isn't a prime concern.... As long as it will pick up Radio 2 and play the odd CD that'll do for me.

Thw whole point of asking about the various trim levels is so that I know what to expect, and also (more importantly), so I can recognise if a car has been rebadged - It has happened to me in the past where I've bought a car only to find it had been rebadged and was actually a lower spec model - Sadly there are far too many dishonest people out there!

Okay, bandwidth isn't a problem for me either, so the offer still stands.... Admittedly you cannot upload yourself, you'd have to send me the photo via email, and I would reply with a link to the image so you can post it. Not an ideal solution, but as I said the offer is there...

Thanks guys....

I noticed that you don't allow images to be posted directly to this website - I can understand why, they take up HUGE amounts of space!

But, if anyone wants to post a message with links to high res scans, I could host them on my website so you can link to them.... Please PM or Email me if anyone is interested in doing that, the offer is there....

Thankyou.... Would anyone care to elaborate a bit further and give full details of the various facelift trim levels? I'm sure I can't be the only one that doesn't know what they are? ;)

Omega General Help / Trim levels?

After looking around the forum, I've been unable to find a listing of the various trim levels on the Omega.... I'm thinking of buying a 2002/3 car, but haven't found what the heck CD, CDX, GLS, Elite etc etc actually mean! Unless you know what these are the letters are meaningless!

Can anyone help with a listing so I know what's what please?

Thanks yet again for the replies - it seems there are more lpg garages than I thought! :)

So, just to show my lack of experience with lpg (for lack of experience, read NONE!), what is involved in refuelling an lpg vehicle?

Thanks Steve...

Since I currently have a motobility lease hire car, it still has a year to go on the lease..... As Omegas aren't exactly two a penny, I thought now was a good time to start looking so I can hopefully find the best value for my money  ;)

The thought of huge petrol bills made me initially consider the diesel options, but maybe lpg would make a V6 a viable option?

My only question as far as lpg goes is finding garages that sell it....  Does anyone know if there's a listing on the web for lpg garages? I'm up in the north east of England (near Middlesbrough).... having always owned petrol engined vehicles I can't honestly say that I've really looked for lpg when I've filled up!

Thanks for the replies guys.... They are a a great help.

After reading up a bit more on the Omega, and having taken the comments made so far into consideration, I'm now wondering just what I'm likely to get for my money?

Remember, a budget of £4000, I could probably stretch to another 200-300 but that would be it.....  The car MUST be an estate to haul all my daughters stuff around - Lifting a heavy wheelchair over a large boot sill isn't practical.

So what models would I be looking at?  Age? Engine (petrol or diesel)? I'd prefer manual gearbox. Trim level?

I still have the best part of a year before I need to change cars, so I'm not in any desperate rush - And I'd like to get everything fixed in my mind before making a purchase.

Again, your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Eddy
