Omega Electrical and Audio Help / wiring fault

hi guys
just registered on here it's a very useful site thanks to those of you taking the time to share your knowledge.

anyways iv'e got a 98 2.ol auto cdx saloon, i don't use it that much because i've also got a van during the week. problem is that with not using it i've been having to jump start it(works fine once running) the other day i jumped it and as i was removing the leads i noticed smoke/smelt burning from were the wiring goes from the engine into the compartment at the drivers side behind the brake fluid resevoir( i assume this goes to the fuse box) i turned the engine off and removed the key but it kept running, i couldn't stall it being an auto so i put the key back in and switched it on again and the engine stopped and the smoke also stopped. i've not tried it since but i'm getting told various things by local garages and really wanted a bit of advice before i drag the car off the get fixed.

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated  :y
