if it starts and will drive take it for an mot then see what that brings if good then changge the engine

Something I would normally think of but passed me by this time  ::)

Still, it has no insurance now so might have to see what I can do with getting out to one...plus I dont really want him knowing yet, bad enough that its took a year to come round to selling it.

Hi,

I previously posted about an Omega Elite having engine trouble, diagnosed a few times as the cams and needing a new engine. Well, the plan was to break it and Ive started listing some parts elsewhere (mainly ebay  :'( )

We are now thinking, he may be better to sell the car he now runs and get this Omega back on the road as its a great car so...as the car has been stood for over a year, what would you advise would need doing to get it back up and running? Apart from a replacement engine and I'd say the breaks will need doing (hoping the calipers are not seized), what else would need checking?

Its a wonderful car with Steinmetz and Irmscher bits and he loves the car but I dont want to suggest it if it could just be one big drain on his wallet getting things right  :-\

Cheers

The Elite seat movement/memory ECU? I believe it is :y

Yes, the box under the seat that controls the movement of the seat. Wasnt sure if it also controlled the memory but if it does, thats a great help too!!  :y Means the one I found is ok although still no dates indicating which its for  :(

Just a quick one and I think I know the answer but....is the driver seat module under the seat the same part in a '99 Omega as it is in a '52 plate?

Tried looking around but cant find anything to confirm...not even an ebay listing with years  ;D

Cheers

You think it will break, but it will open given enough force

I believe it was deadlocked? Press the fob twice when locking...now its open, it does turn without a problem so there are no issues with the lock itself. Everything opened up as normal so could this maybe not work if deadlocked?

Didnt fancy breaking the key as we only have 1 for the car  :) I broke a BMW key when my mate couldnt get in his so wasnt keen.....

Right we are in!!

Thanks for everyones advice and help  :y

The key still would not turn in the lock at all to the point where I thought I would break the key so I abandoned that method.

I then attached a power pack to the starter motor as above and earthed it. Still nothing but heard a little single high pitches tone. Figuring there wasnt enough power, I then attached jump leads to the starter, earthed and used the other cars battery and the car unlocked on the fob!!  :)

Now time to start clearing parts out where possible after its had a good polish inside.

If i get you into the car without damaging anything, will you do me a cracking price on the wheels and tyres?  ;)

Done the first part, as for the 2nd, we had an offer of £325 for the wheels and tyres but he wants a little more for them. I havent been able to see any for sale as with any other Steinmetz Omega part so difficult to price them up. If you'd like to make an offer, feel free  ;)

Unfortunately I obviously cant post the parts on here but it is on an auction site for breaking  :'(

Thanks again for help getting into the car!!  :y

;D ....without causing any damage ;)

Apologies if I've got this round the wrong way, but if your trying to unlock the car with the key...shouldn't it be turned to the RIGHT not the left as you posted

quite correct key should be turned clockwise (right)  :y

Had a feeling it would be....other car was left so figured this was correct. The right was stiff, will get at it shortly.

also if it has been stood for a long period of time, get some lubricant into the lock could have siezed up a bit  :y

Yeah did this, plenty of WD on it, just seems to turn fine as it should, hope the key is strong though! Going to try in a bit.

Large terminal on the starter is the positve (there are two but the one with the large cable is the one you need), the negative can be attached anywhere on the engine block or chassis. :y
If all you are doing is trying to open the car and not start it then you only need a relatively small cable too and not jump leads......

Thanks!! I'll get on this way if opening the door fails. We do only need to get inside the car for parts, very much doubt it will start anyway.

Cheers

Hi, I wonder if you can help me out  ???

Basically, I posted a while ago about an Omega Elite and am now looking at selling or breaking the car  :'(. Unfortunately, as it has been stood for so long, the battery is dead (if connected) and the door will not open on the key. The boot lock failed a while ago and was never replaced as it wasnt used.

I have tried the key several times whilst pulling the handle but no luck, the key turns to the left as far as it is meant to but I darent force as its only 1 key. I have also just seen a post advising to place jump leads to the starter motor to provide power to open the doors? If the battery is connected then hopefully this will work but can somebody advise on where the find the starter motor from underneath and where should the positive be connected?

I also know that it can be done through the grille. Now this is obviously a way that probably should not be on public forums. Ive got so far with his but cannot get to or find the cable. If somebody could maybe point me in the right direction via quick reply to be removed or by PM it would be much appreciated.

We are hoping the battery is still connected but due to it being off road, I have a feeling we disconnected it after locking the car up without thinking it would be left so long.

Any help or info appreciated!!

Thanks

Can this be done by mobile mechanic or again at a garage?

Ran it down to the garage, they just had a listen to it and straight away said cams. Then gave me number for another guy who came round to check it, he said cams too, most likely need a new engine, which he could fit but not be worth getting parts.

Again, no tests have been done on it but we have checked all connections etc and all ok. Again no over heating or leaks, just really rough.

Now looking into selling as whole as it...or breaking for spares. Whichever will get him most money.

MutantCav - Ill PM you, wouldnt want to waste your time. Cheers

Hi,

while since Ive been on, been busy but eventually this week got him to let me put all the top back on. As I say it was stripped down to the cams but, managed to get it all done AND get it started!

It started up, with huge help of my car boosting it and took a while but runs and drives. I drove it to the end of the drive and it stalled, had to get my car back on it.

As for the engine, well, it was on for over an hour in the end. No leaks, no over heating.

Very loud though, engine sounds very rough and now has a lot more movement that it didnt have before. Not sure how to explain it...maybe if you put uprated cams to boost power, you start to get a little movement? That but not in a good way.

There was excessive smell of fuel from middle of the car back although its not ran/started for 6/7 months so probably needs a good run to clear it out.

Theres not much more I can say at this moment. Like I say, no obvious leaks or over heating but certainly sounds like a problem in the cams somewhere. It held the idle ok although jumpy and the engine management light was erm...not on but was? It was like the engine was working hard to keep the revs on, the light was flickering. It was on but not like normal. Im wondering if this was due to the revs nearly cutting out before it caught itself again each time, but probably not.

Its booked in for 10am tomorrow morning to have a local garage have a nosey at it, see what they say. Fingers crossed it wont stall on the way down there  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Going on the above, the head has NOT been taken off.

The cams have to come out to get to the head bolts - so if you can see the cams, they are above the head - so the head is still fitted!

The spark plugs also screw into the head, so you wouldn't see these, if the head was in the boot!

So - nothing by way of valve damage can be ascertained by just looking at that.

I've not read this thread, but, has the cam timing been checked and confirmed, and the engine properly compression tested?

If not - that's the first job - followed by an oil pressure test.

Course, its the rocker covers that been removed!

No test have really been carried out on it. The thread basically tells me that is not been looked at properly from the start. Does the rocker cover have a gasket set? If its not too big a job, I could put them back on for relevant tests to be carried out. I still need to check whats in the boot though.

I went round last night as he was removing the battery and had a quick look, I know I said he took the head off, but didnt realise he put the head in the boot and left cams etc exposed!

The cams are beginning to show signs of rust where they are no longer protected, ie on the rings (sorry dont know how to explain it but the ring shaped parts of the cams) and water sitting in certain parts of the block, such as on the spark plugs with rust starting to show!

Now fearing that a new engine will be the only option, Im heading round in a bit to start getting the water out and see whats in the boot. Think something else may have been taken off.

Still, we will see what its like and try to get somebody local to take a quick look but think it may be a waste of time now. Ill try to get some decent photos of it but again, doubt it will be much use. Dont know where else water could have gone.

As for the trim, as I said it wasnt Irmscher but another extra, its Stienmetz trim which I believe is the window spoiler, boot spoiler, 17" alloys, headligths and a few other bits.
