General Car Chat / Re: Signum 2.2i cambelt
« on: 17 January 2014, 18:54:30 »

I don't want to burst Stemos bubble, (I do really) ;D but it has the bills, to back up the stamps in the book. Probably like me, I always have a ring binder full of anything relative to my cars & bikes.

Many thanks to the forum.

The Signum (if I buy it) could never really replace my Omega, it's just that we're both getting a bit long in the tooth.

General Car Chat / Penetrating oil
« on: 15 March 2013, 11:12:28 »
I found this on a U.S. site, and hope it may be of some use.

There was a nice short item in this month's British Marque
Car Club News, reported by the Connecticut MG Club, taken
from Machinist's Workshop magazine, 2007, wherein someone
reported a test of 4 leading name brand penetrating oils and
a mixture of 50/50 acetone and atf.

They report that they put up a sample of ''scientifically
rusted'' nuts on bolts and tested the penetrating oils,
finding that the torque required to loosen the nuts varied
from 106 to 238 ft lbs and the cost varied from $0.21 to
$0.75 a fl oz for the brand name products and that the
acetone/ATF mix came in at 53 Ft. lbs and $0.10/fl oz.

So, next time you face rusty nuts and bolts, try acetone
mixed with ATF before you just bust off the offending part
with a bigger wrench.

Thanks for the reply.

Both are some distance away, but if they can combine my work with another in the area, it may be worth their while.
I'll see if they reply to the question, if not a PM may be in order.

As I say, I'm happy with my local garage, but if the work is of any use to either of them, all the better.

John.

I would have suggested Concorde, but you'll have to make do with the QE3 :P

Feel free as in making contact, rather than as in free labour.

There were/are experts on here who could do cambelts blindfolded  :o

Actually, I could probably fit one blindfolded, but it may be attached to the diff.

It's some time since I was last on here, but after 11 years of ownership, I still love My old girl. :y

My question is : with a cambelt change required in the very near future, plus breathers & anything else needed, is there anyone willing to do this in the Brigg area of North Lincs?

I have used a local garage for this work, with good results, but if the work would be useful to anyone, within travelling distance, feel free.

Thanks,
John.

Omega General Help / Floppy front end
« on: 06 September 2009, 19:53:08 »
It comes to all of us in time I suppose.

My 3.0 estate needs a front suspension overhaul and I was considering converting to MV6 springs and dampers.
The part Nos. for the dampers are 9192291/2 (I think) Does anyone know the part Nos. for the corresponding springs please?
Is 15mm the amount the front end will drop under this set up and would you suggest I replace the drop links at the same time, as a matter of course?
Thanks. :y

Omega General Help / Re: New cambelt = strange noises
« on: 09 October 2008, 13:27:15 »
Hi,
It's cerainly related to engine speed. The noise appears to be central between the 2 banks, at the top. A muted slapping is the best way I can describe it!
How it can be described as a normal Omega, I just don't know, it's worrying the life out of me.
I may call into the garage on Sat. to argue the toss.

Did they change the aux belt as well or reuse the old one? If they reused it and didn't put it back so it was rotating the same way that could make it noisy. Could also be the aux belt tensioner getting tired, or the rubber seal around the timing cover coming loose and dragging on the belt.

Have you heard any pinking?

If you get the cambelt DVD you can follow the steps to exposing the timing belt then all you need is an E20 torx socket to turn the engine by hand and see if the timing marks line up and if the notch on the tensioner is where it should be. Doesn't involve disturbing the timing and you'll then know what's what.

New aux belt fitted & the same time.
My Wife took it into the garage this am & was told, it's all ok, sounds like a normal Omega to me :-/
As I generally look after all the cars in the family, I don't have the time or inclination to touch the Omega, that's why it's farmed out.
Perhaps it's me being fussey, but i'm used to it being virtually silent at tickover. :(

Mmmm i would be very anxious to have it checked in case something is not right ...... very expensive if something slips  .... was it Vx fitted ?  :-/

No, it was my local garage, who normally do a decent job. The obvious thing, is to take it back I suppose, but i'm not a natural complainer. We didn't have the confidence in it to be able to take it on holiday this year.

go complaim matey, it's alot better than snapped belt/ bent valves and big money repairing it or scrapping it just for that.

see what they say anyway, could get them to try running it without aux belt on

It's far too good to scrap, I'll take it back to the garage & let them have a listen. Thanks for all the advice :y

I'm a bit worried, having had a Gates cambelt kit, Vx tensioner pulley & water pump fitted, about a strange noise ever since.
The car used to tickover silently, now I have this flapping noise, as if the belt is loose. The performance seems a little flat, & it runs just slighly warmer, as if the timing is a bit out.
Are some kits noisier than others maybe? :-/
