Got a mot failure regarding leaking from cam cover gaskets. According to the local Opel dealer here in Norway they now only come with cam covers. The gasket alone is no longer available. The price for covers with gaskets was around 7.000,- nok or 520 gbp. Are aftermarket gaskets the only viable option now?

Omega General Help / Remove foam insulation floor

Hi. Im removing the interior from a 95 omega in preparation for some welding on the floor. Have gotten all the seats out and also the centre console, carpets and rear floor foam insulation.
The question is the thick foam insulation under both front seat footwells. This seem to dissapear up the torpedo wall behind the dash. And also over the propeller shaft tunnel under the dash. Is it all just one big piece over both front footwells? Seems like the only options to remove this foam is to either remove the dash or to cut the foam into more managable pieces? Really dont want to remove the dash.

As mentioned there is 2 different manual heater systems in the Omega. We have 3 pfl Omegas. All with manual controls. The 1994 and 1995 Omegas have 4 speed fan and dash centre and side vents live at all time. The 1997 Omega has 5 speed fan. And all the dash vents controlled by the heater control. Also the placement of the symbols at the air direction knob is different. The older system has screen all the way to the left on the knob while the newer had front screen straight up on the knob. Personally i much prefer the older system in the winter in Norway. I put it in front screen/footwell mode and it will also blow out the side vents to keep the side windows ice/fog free. With the newer system in the 1997 i find i sometimes have to alternate the selector back and forth to keep both the windscreen and side windows clear. Because that dont blow out the side vents unless selected.

Update: Tried swapping the relay but made no difference. So ordered a new sensor. Car has been in use daily since problem occured. Cooling fan has been running full blast after maybe 10 min driving.  New sensor arrived yesterday so changed it today. Car ran fine all the way to work today with no cooling fan coming on.
So hopefully the problem is now fixed:)

Girlfriend came home now complaining that her Omega made a strange noise. Quickly found the engine cooling fan running flat out. Outside temp 0C  Engine temp on the dash showed completely normal. Coolant level normal. On disconecting temp sensor on radiator the fan stops. Relay in enginebay relay box clicks when temp sensor gets reconnected. Fan starts up and runs on full as soon as tempsensor is reconnected. Upper radiator hose varm and lower hose cold. Nice warmth in cabin heater. Radiator probably 3 months old.
Are the sensor itself the most likely culprit?

Had this on our sedan. Left shock went through the turret. Cut a turret out of a car at the scrap yard and got someone to weld it in. Couple of years later same thing happened to the right shock. Just by coincidense it happened on the way to the Opel dealer for some programming. Dealer welded it back up the same day. Several years ago and car is still in daily use. Wasnt that expensive either.

I have done this on an Omega x20xev. I removed the ps pump and the bracket that holds it. As for the engine mount, if i remember correctly the bracket that holds the ps pump and ac pump is bolted to the engine mount in the rear. I unbolted the bracket and removed it leaving the rest of the engine mount in place. Just had room to get it back together without having to undo the rest of the engine mount. Rear end of the bracket is sandwhiched between the engine block and the mount. With one of the engine mount bolts running through and securing the bracket.
The engine i worked one had ac but the ac pump had previously been removed. Bracket and work needed is slightly different on a non ac car.
Removing the ps pump alone will get you nowhere i think. Also aux belt tensioner and dipstick tube must be removed.
Its that big bracket itself that obscures everything. With that out of the way you got all the space in the world.

I have found the adjusters from tyc/depo aftermarket lights to be promising. The aftermarket lamps themselves are in my opinion useless/extremely low quality. But the adjusters inside them seems far superior to the original hella adjusters. Different design but fit in the hella lamp. I have picked up a couple of broken/damaged depo lights over the years. Always tear them apart, remove the adjusters and bin the rest. I have also bought a roll of butyl band from eBay. Usually add a little extra butyl to the headlights before i seal them up again to be sure to avoid leakage.

Update: Hella sensor from Germany finally arrived on friday after spending forever in the Norwegian custom. Got around to changing it today. Thought i could try to get at it without removing the big bracket for the power steering and ac. But found it impossible due to this car being Norwegian and having a block heater installed that restricted access even more. So removed the bracket and changed the sensor. Bracket went out and in again without really having to mess with the rest of the engine mount. Eml stayed on for maybe 5-10 seconds after initial startup and then went out. Drove the car 50 km round trip to my mothers place tonight and everything worked fine. Eml now goes out immediately after startup and car runs good. So happy days.

Thanks for the replies. The aftermarket sensor thats in it now is available here in Norway for about 215£! Opel charged 150£ for the original that was the wrong type. I have now ordered the Hella variant i found on german eBay for about 20£. This means the girlfriend will have to wait at least another week for her car but i hope that sensor will do the trick. At least we have an Omega 3,0 as a backup vehicle so now i get to drive that for a while as she drives my 2,0.

One of our Omegas got a bad crank sensor. 1994 x20xev. Paperclipped it and got a code 19. The car is very hard to start and backfires stumbles before it fires up. The problem is i cant seem to find an original crank sensor. Went to Opel and they ordered the only type they had in their system from Germany. The sensor arrived but its the wrong type. The one that Opel says is the only type they can get a hold of is GM 9174621. After doing some research it seems to me that Opel changed the sensor and the engine management around 1996 somtime. I think i need sensor GM 90458251. And that i cant find anywhere. The sensor that now failed is an aftermarket sensor that only lasted 2 years.
Is a Hella sensor my best bet? Hella sensors are available on eBay. And it sounds a bit better than Maxgear and other brands ive never heard of…

General Car Chat / Omega headlight adjusters

Changed a headlight adjuster last night on a post 98 halogen hella lamp. Classic case of adjuster broken in half. Took an adjuster from an old broken Depo lamp. The only part on the depo lamp that has better quality than the Hella original in my opinion. All went well. But as i took everything apart i found that i would need to keep the white plastic clip from the hella lamp that grabs on to the reflector. When trying to get the remnants of the black plastic adjuster with the ball on it out from its seat in the white clip the whole black adjuster just basically pulverised in my hands. So i got the parts i needed to rebuild the lamp but i was very surprised of just how brittle the original adjuster was. Where they this crappy from new or is it something that happens with age and heat?

Norwegian Omegas had automatic headlights as standard. Here the normal dipped lights come on automatically when you start the engine and lightswitch is off. Dashlights stay off and full beam will not work. Then you turn lightswitch to sidelights and headlights go off and sidelights and dashlights come on as normal. In lights on position it works as any other Omega. Wouldnt it be possible to use this wiring for your project? I am sure it is covered in Haynes as it was a factory country specific option.
As for the bulb failure module if it still wont work when every wire is returned to original it lives at the bottom of the a pillar. On lhd cars its clipped to the car sidewall as far up as possible behind the dash. Where the driver side a pillar meets the dash. On rhd cars i dont know. But guess it then will be positioned behind the glovebox.

Edit: bulb failure module location is based on pfl Omegas. Assuming fl is the same.

Yes. Prefacelift have the sensors at the top of the B pillars. And at least on the Norwegian market only higher spec models had alarm in the early years. 94-95 ir remote cars. They all had remote central locking and immobilizer though.
