Omega General Help / Re: v6 misbehaves when cold

Get yourself a tin of carb cleaner preferably with a straw type nozzle. Start it up from cold and give little short squirts around the area where the hissing is coming from. If you squirt on the leak or disconnected pipe then the revs will rise for a second or two. That gives you a better idea of the area to search for split pipes or disconnected pipes :y

Cheers!- sounds worth a shot! is it safe to be spraying around? i.e. whats my chances of becoming a human fireball?

Omega General Help / v6 misbehaves when cold
« on: 29 August 2010, 17:09:31 »
engine very rough when the engines cold, sounds like some cylinders missing. and brake pedal also intermittently very stiff and unresponsive before cars fully warmed up, as if no assistance.

also air con does not seem to chill properly, but does blow cold air.

not too bothered about air con but suspect vac pipe issues, and I gather that brakes air con and brakes all rely on a vaccum. when I start up I hear a sound behind dash,? sucking. and when I turn it off  with bonnet up.theres a definent hiss from the top of the engine at the back

if I wait till the engines warmed up a bit (generally the time it takes to smoke a cig) car runs okay, the engine and brakes are fine.

its been doing this a while, been to garage who took off pipes to top of engine and cleaned some gunk out of them, and changed oil, in hope that replacing old thick oil might be causing things to stick when cold. does not seem to have helped as yet.   posted similar a while back, suggestions of idle control valve and exhaust manifold. both seem okay. ICV  appartently only a year old.

any suggestions gratefully recieived, thanks.

1998 2.5 being a bit rubbish when started in mornings for the last week or so, revs up and down and bloody thing stalled twice this morning whilst moving which is unique in my 20 year career of running various bangers.  After ten mins or so everything seems fine, tickover seems about the right speed. Any ideas?

Gearbox will go in, torque convertor needs to stay with it. Plenty of other bits and bobs not engine related would also be useful to keep

cheers rob, so its same gearbox then?

Omega General Help / auto gearboxes/ spares between cars
« on: 22 June 2010, 19:39:27 »
getting a 1998 2.5CDX and Im thinking about hanging onto my 1999 2.0CD  on a SORN just in case things start dropping off the 2.5CDX which I will be running day to day. I imagine most of the engine related stuff will be no use to me but my question is, would I be able to put the gearbox from the 2.0 into the 2.5 if the 2.5's gearbox failed? the 2.0 gearbox was reconditioned only about 16k ago so I think it would still have plenty of life left in it.

I kind of dont want to sent the 2.0 to the scrap yard, on my last visit to Pimhole in bury there was only two omegas(facelifts) so thinking it might be handy to have it sat there in garden ready to take bits off.

thanks for the welcome people!  Im thinking of getting rid of my tired old t-reg for a V6, but scared of the petrol prices because I have to truddle about town endlessly as part of my job. Anyone encouraging about LPG?  I just dont fancy a diesel.

yeah, cant be flashing at all the mondeo drivers, will wear out the lights,

maybe you were part of the accidental three car omega convoy a few weeks ago in bury, driving past the town hall.  got to be long odds on that happening.

parted company with the Omega, cold start issues depressing me and not the time or ability to sort them out myself.Seen a couple of newer Omegas but seemed to have problems,i,e, 40k facelift with engine lights on.

Diesel Mondeo now my daily transport,
good points- newer motor, mad acceleration in third and fourth gear, still a big car, seems a bit fatter than omega somehow.

Bad points- getting used to a manual box again after five years of auto, broke down immediately ( repair under aftersales warranty-thankfully), only returning 30-32 mpg on my daily crawls around town. so might not justify extra expense over petrol cars.

General Car Chat / Re: Difficult car decision.....

I found that the company with the iggy pop shouting all over their adverts became more reasonable after second or third time i entered my details. Im 35 and live in a bad postcode in manchester and park 2 litre CD on the street.

I know I could insure a focus or a astra for less but just take extra cost on the chin, basically because I dont want another astra or focus. It sucks to be paying half or more the value of your car in insurance every year when you have been driving nearly twenty years but Id still prefer to drive a nice car.

That said, Id be down the East Lancs like a shot to have a look at a 2.6 or 3litre LPG omega that still had a bit of life left in it.

considering most of the omegas are auto gearboxes, I seldom have much option as to when I change gear anyway.

my omega tells me I am already doing 999.9 mpg half the time anyway. (downhill on motorway),  better than a Prius already.

I was following this with interest, to see what Cameron was proposing he said in the run up he hoped to be the most pro enterprise government ever.

Turns out he proposes reducing employment rights to create this new age of opportunity for employers- unfair dismissal not recognised for workers under two years service, A financial outlay required to register a case for unfair dismissal, Reduced sick pay. REDUCED WORKING CONDITIONS!

Whilst some here might see this as a step in the right direction and some might be opposed to it, does any one else feel like me surprised it has not been more widely reported? its not on BBC news or most news websites. The opposition are not protesting about it.

Instead we get to read Jordan is getting divorced and some such other tripe. Sad

mmm,
Nigela fills her jumper well and cooks nice food but is fifty, one suspects massive amounts of slap used.

Cole before X factor presenting was known for singing in a band whos main audience was 12 year olds and using a nigerian toliet attendant in a nightclub as a punchbag.

no ones perfect...
