Omega General Help / Re: fuel consumption
« on: 02 November 2012, 23:15:30 »
urm some differences around then.
i have yet to own a fuel eficent car. if i had to do a big comute to work then that would be looked into, but as others have said..... buy big estate car then fill boot with a gas tank :( is it me, or take out spare wheel and put tank there? what happens when you get a puncture >:( still not convinced.   each to there own

You need to ask yourself when you last had a puncture. I have had 2 in 30 years of driving and only one of those in the miggy about 12 years ago.

If I could afford the gas route then I'd lose the spare and get one of the inflater goos that most modern new cars come with these days rather than the spare wheel.

Thanks chrisgixer,

My PAS had started to leak after a service when the main dealer put dex 6 in. I know because I asked what the fluid was so I could top it up at home. Funny enough a few months later they said the PAS was leaking and I needed a new PAS pump and because there was a GM upgrade the new pump would cost £850 fitted ( because it needed new pipes fitted) The old one is still on and the "urgent repair" was 19 months ago now !!

I went to the main dealer again today to re check the prices and got a different parts lad who give him his due was really on the ball with his efforts.

Anyway the up to date price for the rear gasket is £16.26 inc vat, the front gasket is £9.18 Inc vat and the filter ( wait for it) .... £82.80 BUT THAT DOES INCLUDE VAT!!
Dex 6 is £8.46 a ltr and they recomend 3 litres for a full gearbox (oil) replacement. He looked blank when I said it was not an oil in the gearbox but a fluid, bless him.

I've had a quote of opi oils so will probably go with them even though they are more expensive but it's not a main dealer.... ;D

Thank you one and all for the reassurance and advice on this topic especiallly the link to opie oils and tranny fluids. I've found this one

Fuchs TITAN ATF 6000 SL Latest synthetic ATF DEXRON VI approved but it is a bit expensive although it is suposed to be good for 250,000 km .... and the miggy deserves it...

Anyone got a source for dexron 6 please? I've been looking but not having any luck. Found plenty of dex 2 and 3 but no 6 in a uk shop.

TIA

Chimpy

Thanks Dbug.

This site and the people on it really make owning a miggy easier. I've always been a main dealer mug but being skint I now need to maintain my own motor as I can't bear to let her go just yet.
If i got all the jobs that need doing done at a vx main dealer it would cost £1000's, lol.

Hi folks,
Really just a post for reassurance after reading the guides. I've posted before with the problems of the gearbox in limp mode and have decided to change the atf as I believe it has never been done in the 104k miles of driving.

I've have the 2.6 V6 facelift miggy on an 02cplate so from the guides it is the AR25 auto box.

I've read the ATF change guide http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90664.0 and for once it appears to be something I am confident to do myself.
Reading which fluid I need it appears to be dexron 3 which again is ok. Reading around the web looking for the fluid I found this link http://forums.trailvoy.com/archive/index.php/t-87675.html which basically says that GM don't licence dexon 3 now only dexon VI and for a complete change dexon VI should be used.

Should I go for dexon 6 assuming I will NOT be able to get all of the old stuff out, even with a sump drop. I believe the dexon 6 is backward compatible but not 100% sure.

What throws the spanner in the works is this:

I went into a VX dealer I trust (why ??) and asked about steering pump fluid and was told it was dexon 6 for the pump.

In another more local VX dealer they quoted me £10 a ltr for dexon 3 for the gearbox atf but they also said that it was the same fluid for the steering pump.

That would back up the idea of using 6 in the box rather than 3 ( 6 is suposed to give better fuel consumption being a thinner fluid) and it would save money to boot but this more local dealer parts dept woman (which I'm not enarmoured with) told me catagorically that there was no filter for the gearbox fluid. After I assured her there was one on or in the gearbox because I'd been told on a forum there was she scoffed and went into the workshop and asked the mechanics who told her again that THERE WAS NO FILTER EITHER FOR OR IN THE GEARBOX.

So then,
after that long winded explination should I,

Use dexron 3 or dexron 6 for the Auto box?
Use dexron 2 or dexron 6 for the steering pump?
And should i go back to the more local Dealer with filter in hand and show the parts dept and the mechx the filter ?

Oh and anyone got a good source for the correct fluids please.

Chimpy.

Omega General Help / Re: Transmission codes and problems
« on: 26 July 2012, 23:09:54 »
Hi buttsy19,

Symptoms are limp home mode if it is in drive but if I put it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd then drive it's ok. A bit of a clunck as it goes through the gears but nothing drastic. Other than that it drives ok, up to 70 and keeps running ok. Starts up first time hot and cold, so nothing really to much other than using a shed load of petrol. I drove 25 miles today and used over 70 miles worth of petrol. Now I know the trip comps are not too accurate but this is way too much petrol for the journey. Also there is a really massive smell of petrol.

The techie at the dealers put the codes out but as soon as he started the car the light came on again.

The engine control relay, that's under the bonnet ?

TIA
Chimpy

Omega General Help / Transmission codes and problems
« on: 26 July 2012, 14:13:32 »

Hi folks,
The miggy started playing the bag of hammers tune the other day with the engine management light of the car with spanner through it came on. I read the codes using the pedal trick and got a few that looked like a transmission fault.

Anyway, took it to the garage for the tech 2  test and asked for the codes. It was something to do with the auto box and looking at the list of codes it does point to a tranny fault.

The codes are as follows

P1700 present,

P1625 Present,

P0748 Not Present.

The main dealer said they don't do Auto gearboxes as they never see them these days in modern cars ( cheeky bugger saing miggies are not modern) but they mentioned something to do with a solenoid. The 1700 code as I believe on the site is a service of the gearbox. The car last had a major service at 81k and it was 2.5 years ago and the current milage is now 104k.

If the 1700 code is an oil change that is ok but what are the other two codes for as I can't find them on the site.

Take care and TIA,
Chimpy.

It's been 3 weeks or so now since I put the new battery on and it's working fine. Tested it all again at the weekend and the figures were 13.25 on idle no load. 2000 revs 14.34 and at 2000 revs with full load of heated seats, rear heated window, fan, radio, full beam lights the display said 12.57v so I'm well chuffed.

Thank you so much to all who helped but especially Kevin who has done the check list. It cost me nothing as I got the new battery on the 4 yr garuntee from halfords but without this forum I would have gone to the main stealership who may have said it was only the battery but could also have easilly said it was a battery and an alternator.  Even so a new battery was going to be £110 where as it was free as mentioned........ Oh and kneepad, I am going to do the bonnet cable this next week or so....... ;D

It does seem a tad on the low side at 2000 revs with load, but as you say the battery could have sat on the shelf for a long time.
Give it a while, take it for a good run and let the alternator do it's work.

Why don't you tighten up the bonnet cable?  ;D ;D ;D

I've been going to for a few months now since seeing the tips on here. The stealership said it had to be renewed at £114 ( cost of cable about £20) as it "can't be adjusted"
obviously the stealership doesn't read OOF!!
