from what i can gather yes it does but the garage said as i originally didnt know the cambelt history  i would be mad not to have it changed although they would only fit a full cambelt kit after doing the seal not just a belt for my peace of mind as much as theres but as i now know the history and the fact the belt tensioners are in good condition so i can save on the price of the kit

hiya it defo engine oil, ive bit the bullet today and had it in at the garage it is the crank seal :( iam of to vauxhall in the morning to pay for the seal £20.03 cos they dont stock it.
on the plus side i found out the t/belt was done 20k ago so wont have to pay out for that doing at the same time i was quoted £70-£80 parts and labour so about £50-£60 labour does this sound about right ? he also had a scout about underneath  while up on ramp and rekons its a gud un :y

i gave everthing a good scrub with the wifes t-towel :-X although i only wiped away old "gunk" and road dirt ect no "fresh" oil was found. After it leaked again with the new filter ive rooted around underneath again and theres still no visable oil apart from on the plastic cover everything is dry ? i can cope with most niggles but drops of oil get on my nerves leaving rainbows all over the drive  :'( i serously dont know what to try next i could really do without a garage bill this close to xmas

the mating surface was spotless i had a real good look for  gouges deep scratches ect but it was spot on, car was warm when i removed cambelt cover just about warm enough to work on without getting too burnt . iam just at a loss with it now ive spent too many hours laid on my back trying to source the leak and iam no closer to finding it what is the norm when the crank seal goes? will it spray oil everywhere behind the cambelt cover, must point out its prob a penny size blob thats gathering on the plastic tray after maybe 50 miles or so

sorry i meant to add i changed the filter yesterday morning and its not showing any signs of weeping now so it ruled out that unfortunatly, if crank seal goes would it be easy to tell after removing the timing belt cover ie would the belt, pulleys back of casing ect be covered in oil?

ive changed the oil filter again fitting hand tight but iam still seeing oil on the plastic guard directly under the bottom pulley ive done the following
1. rocker gaskets and breathers cleaned
2. removed the timing belt cover and couldnt see any signs of any oil cambelt dry as a bone inside of case dry no specs of oil or anything that points toward oil been flicked around in there
3. cleaned all gunk ect away from underside of engine and surrounding areas
4. ran the car on ramps for 20 mins - no oil drips evident after checking with a torch while the car was running .. bone dry apart from the oil filter showing signs of weeping only very very slightly  on the seal
5. changed the oil filter , went to work and back  and guess what ..... oil on the plastic case again  >:(

umm maybe i was a bit giddy when tightening it  :-[ i just hoped that new filter ,tighter than the last would cure it , car shop again in the morn then and keep my fingers crossed after doing it up hand tight :y
ill update in the morn
thanks

you cant rub the oil with your finger but its definatly there visibly right where the seal and housing meet and you can scrape it out with finger nail if that makes sense

i serviced it prob about a mth ago mainly to change the old filter in the hope a new one would cure the leak as my first port of call when i saw the leak was the oil filter but still no joy so i had the rocker gasket done still no joy if the crank seal had gone what signs would that show behind the timing belt cover would it be covered in oil behind there? a garage originally a mth ago opened my bonnet looked at oil sat on plastic tray and said crank seal and timing belt cos belt would now be contaminated with oil , when i took timing belt cover off today i couldnt find any signs of oil most definatly not on the belt does this rule out the crank seal? does anyone know if you can "overtighten" the oil filter knackering the rubber seal ? please say yes thats all it is :D

if there is something ive missed and the crank seal is the culprit can this be done without having to remove the timing belt or will i at least get away without having to buy a cambelt kit as i now know it was done 20k ago, obviously dont want to cut corners if it will later cost my dearly but i could really do without shelling out for the cambelt doing at the mo

i always smear a bit of oil on the seal before fitting iam thinking it points more to the housing than the filter itself as it was leaking oil before hand and i changed the filter to try cure it. you can just see the oil sat there where the filter butts up to the housing, could i have over tightened it maybe,?
cheers

ive posted a couple of topics regarding my oil leak, unfortunatly iam no nearer finding the source, ive had the rocker gasket done - no leaks pots are dry as a bone .
today i stripped off the cambelt cover and all is good in there too no signs of anything leaking the belt looks in good nick as do the tensioners ect no contamination of oil on belt which is a plus i  also found that the date of the cambelt change was written on the inside of the cover, bonus as i didnt know when it was last changed , ive now around another 20k before its due (going on 40k intervals):y ... but again iam stumped as to where the oil is coming from thats sitting on the plastic tray at the front, i re-assembled cover and put the car on the ramps and left running whilst looking for oil with a torch, again no visible signs of leaking as i cleaned everywhere 1st with a rag, then i noticed the rim of the oil filter where it seals to the housing was showing fresh oil, although i couldnt see it running down the filter or anything surely i shouldnt be able to see oil here if it has seated off properly? i changed the filter a mth ago in the hope it was that that was causing the oil leak so iam thinking now that maybe there is a "nick" or gouge in the filter housing where it seats off allowing oil to seep has anyone experienced this ? getting me a bit mad now as i cant pin point the source and although rainbows are nice the dont look pretty outside my house or on my drive :)
