Omega General Help / 3.0 Buying Advice
« on: 17 March 2012, 22:01:55 »
Hi Folks,

Been away from this forum and Omega's for about a year now, since I sold my X reg 2.5 V6 Auto to my dad due to crippling fuel costs.

Anyway, I stupidly bid (and subsequently won) a pre-facelift S reg 3.0 Auto Estate, Elite model on a commonly used auction site last night. Its going to be used as a second car, appears clean enough, only a small bit of bubbling at the base of a couple of the doors, but low mileage for age and it has history.

Its a local car, so I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go and have a look tomorrow. Fortunately as it's a second car, the fuel costs aren't so much of a concern, but is there anything in particular I need to be aware of with the 3.0?

Thanks in advance,

John.

At the most it would have been couple of miles through a built up area.

Just seems strange that up until the point I stopped the car (due to lack of PAS & temp gauge rising due to snapped belt) the car drove spot on, now its, excuse the terminology, knackered  ::)

Omega General Help / V6 Auto Gearbox Problem
« on: 16 January 2011, 14:30:23 »
Basically, last week, the tensioner on the aux belt failed and I ended up having to get the car recovered home. I wasn't present when it was recovered, I basically got a lift to work, got my dad to drop the keys off and then it got recovered home.

Replaced the Aux belt and got the car running again on Friday. Took it for a run and it didn't feel quite right...Accelerator felt a bit stiff and I just couldn't get to grips with the autobox, I was kicking down too much and the car was lurching etc, but I just assumed that because i'd been driving my dads Rover manual all week, the Auto was taking some getting used to.

I've been using the car all weekend though and its just not right. When pulling out to overtake a car and pressing on the accelerator its flat as a fart with hardly any power. Kicking down and it sometimes just doesn't bother, meaning i've got to take my foot off the accelerator then plant it.

When I plant it though, or on the off chance that it does kick down OK, instead of kicking down say one gear, its kicking right down to 2nd, lurching forward and then working its way back through the gears as quickly as possible back to where it was before meaning that its still flat as a fart  :-/

Sport mode is OK though.

What i'm wondering, is I know the place I used for Recovery use a spec lift. Would this kind of issue be likely to come from them lifting the front end of a RWD Automatic and having the back wheels rolling on the road?!

I should add btw that the car had a full re-conditioned autobox fitted 12k miles ago so it's not a shagged 122k/11yr old box !!

It's driving fine around town, its just on the open road when i'm requiring the power that its causing problems.

Omega General Help / Couple of queries

Car is a 2000 (X) 2.5 V6 CDX Auto.

Firstly, i've noticed that if I run the car to work and back, then start it up immediately after i've parked up, it idles at ~700rpm (normal i'd say) - however if the engine is COLD its idling at around 1100rpm! And doesn't drop...Anything of concern or is it just a dodgy sensor somewhere? This has just appeared the past day or so, was fine before.

Secondly i've got a strange "grumbling" (best way I can describe it) noise coming from the N/S/R on acceleration. It doesn't seem apparent all the time and is most noticeable under hard acceleration up to 30-40ish. Its only come on the past day or so (again; def wasn't there when I bought the car) - I may be over reacting when I suspect it might be the diff, although i'm hoping its something as simple as a loose exhaust bracket! Any opinions? Like I said I can't really hear it when accelerating past 40 (but it could be just engine noise masking the sound) or indeed say doing a 50-70 sprint, but its very apparent upto 40 (indeed I can hear it over the radio!)

Cheers,

John

Welcome to the forum.

My Omega can also be seen gracing the streets of Hartlepool from time to time - i'm from Middlesbrough but I spend quite a bit of time in Hartlepool with friends and also work.

Fantastic looking car John, I would have given my right arm to have a car as good as that when I was 21, I think at that age I was driving a Mk 1 Escort, with a Flintstones-style floorpan  ;D

Welcome to the forum  :y

Jon

All I will say to that Jon, is that I work bloody hard for my money. I enjoy my nights out obviously, but i'd rather spend my free cash saving aside for my cars & bits etc, or work weekends for extra money instead of pissing it up the wall! TBH, insurance & purchase cost weren't a factor, its the fuel costs i'm dubious about; the only realistic consideration to factor is my Calibra was a second car (alongside my Vectra C) - so £140 Vectra finance + £80 Vectra Insurance + £110 Calibra Insurance + Fuel costs for the month means technically running the Omega is cheaper than previous experiences, even using it on a daily basis  ;D My commute is only 16 miles round trip daily anyway...

On that note though, I must admit i've had plenty of sheds! I think this is car 32 in 4 years!! (I've lost count  :o )

Hey folks,

Found this site through Google when looking for Omega information. Bit of background; my names John and i'm 21. I have an extensive car background (despite only having a license for 4 years) and i'm a big Vauxhall fan; my history with Vauxhalls includes MK3 Cavaliers, a MK3 Astra, some MK4 Astra's, numerous Vectra B's, a Vectra C (until earlier this year) and also a Calibra V6 which I owned for a while.

Since selling the Vectra in February, I toyed with another Astra G SXi, getting rid of that to run a Volvo S40 for a few months. Unfortunately, old Volvo's, albeit reliable, don't really do it for me and it was only a 1.6, so a bit sluggish.

I've been looking for something a little more lively to replace it with and was strongly considering a Vectra B GSi. However, an impulse buy on eBay put the cap on that.

I've always liked Omega's and i've always quite fancied one. So I couldn't resist this 2000 (X) Omega 2.5 V6 CDX Auto - 120k miles, bags of history, 12 months ticket, few months tax, recently had a reconditioned gearbox fitted, full service (inc cambelt) for the right side of 1k; add in excellent condition, a pretty decent spec and the fact that it looks "smart as" (to quote my old man) meant it wasn't long before I ended up winning the auction and left wondering how much it was going to cost me to pick it up  ;D

Collected it on Saturday and I have to say, with the exception of the Calibra (the old C25XE 2.5 V6 engine, but with a Manual box) this is probably my favourite Vauxhall to date (in fact I rate it more than the 56 reg Vectra C 1.8 I had).

The fuel consumption is taking some getting used to however (its well over a year since I got rid of the Calibra) and i've only had limited experience with Automatics in the past, but I absolutely love it. Insurance is reasonable as well, considering the car and my age!

Anyway enough of the waffling, some pics of the new car  :y

The eagle eyed of you will notice the petrol light is on in this pic mind!!

Plans for the car haven't been finalized yet. My private plate is currently in the process of being transferred from the Volvo onto the Omega, so thats the first job. After that i'm unsure; to be honest I like the way it looks already so it will more than likely be a little bit of tweaking under the bonnet and leaving the exterior as it is!

I've already had a quick look around the forum and it appears to be a good resource, so hopefully I will stick around and be able to contribute as and when i'm able to!

Regards,

John

At £300 that is an absolute steal  :o

That looks like a very clean motor  8-)

Incidentally, the registration number of my first Vectra B SRi was T550 HVV - i've seen a fair few Vectra's with similar registrations also, so chances are they all came from the same dealer at around about the same time I would imagine...

Pretty much !

Majority of the time though, i've had two cars at the same time (both taxed/tested/insured and on the road) so it's not as though i've only ran one car and changed 32 times...

Although at the moment I do just have one car, which is the exception  ::)

 ;D

To be fair, I did go a bit overboard and I've had some right sheds, but its been a laugh along the way and I've learnt so much with regards to mechanics etc, as most of the stuff I've bought has required work.

Thankfully I've calmed down a little now; I can't afford the £80 every time I change to transfer the plate over  ;)

Yep !! Just remembered i've missed a Vauxhall off, a P reg MK3 Astra 1.6 16v I had for a bit prior to the green Astra G  :D

In total it breaks down as

2 BMW's (K reg 316i/K reg 520i)

1 Seat (R reg Cordoba)

1 Honda (R reg Accord)

9 Vauxhalls (8 pictured above + MK3 Astra)

6 Fords (2 MK1 Mondeo Diesels, 52 reg MK3 Mondeo 1.8, 54 reg MK3 Mondeo TDCi, an R reg Escort and a P reg Fiesta)

5 Rovers (T reg 214i, 2 R reg 420 Diesels, P reg 620 Si and an S reg 620 Si)

4 Volvo's (2 440's, S reg S40 and an R reg V40)

1 Renault (S reg clit)

1 Citroen (R reg Saxo VTR)

1 Skoda (02 plate Octavia)

1 Peugeot (N reg 106 Diesel)

Got that made my head hurt. But yep, 32.....

I'll jump on the bandwagon seeing as there are quite a few of these threads kicking about  ;D

First off, here is my current pride and joy - a 2000 registered Omega 2.5 V6 CDX Auto. Love it to bits, although i'm toying with the idea of swapping for a Vec B SRi 2.6 V6... so i'm not 100% sure whether the Mig is staying at the moment !!

And some of the past Vauxhalls i've had within the last 5 years  ;)

2007 (56) Vauxhall Vectra 1.8i VVT Exclusiv - Bought because I needed something reliable and fancied something newer. At the time, I had a 54reg Mondeo TDCi which was one of the most unreliable cars I have ever owned, so I chopped it in for this Vectra. I actually quite miss it...

1998 (R) Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8v Club - My first experience with an Astra G, this was a good solid little car, bit sluggish on the open road though hence the sale and the purchase of the next car on the list.

2002 (51) Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16v SXi - As above, bought cheap to runabout in early last year. I was going to lower it, change the alloys and generally tidy it up, but I sold it as it stood before I had chance  ::)

1994 (L) Vauxhall Calibra 2.5 V6 - this car was an absolute beast. Impeccable condition as well, unfortunately lots of timewasters when I came to sell it spelt the end for this beauty and I stripped it, sold the parts and weighed the shell in. The engine still lives on in a Corsa B that was converted, however  :y

1998 (R) Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 LS - Bought as a cheap runaround off my mate, I had a load of Vectra B GSi bits in the garage and the aim was to make a rep. I started to do some work to it, but swapped it for a Saxo VTR before I had chance to finish.

1994 (L) Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8 LS - Now this was a car and a half. £110 of my hard earned wages changed hands for this 2 owner, 69k car back in 2007. I ran it for ages, and ideally wanted to utilise it for a mad engine conversion. At around the time the tax was running out however, a mate had his Cavalier nicked and an offer was made on this that just couldn't be refused!

1999 (T) Vauxhall Vectra SRi 140 - My first ever Vauxhall and I got given this car for free, in 2006. It had tax & MoT, just required a cleanup. I ran it up until the point I bought the Cavalier above, and then sold it for a healthy price.

So thats the Vauxhalls covered. I would be here forever with every other car that i've owned. Oh, btw, i'm 22, hence why i've only had 5 years worth of Vauxhall ownership  :o (i've had 32 cars since I passed my test in 2006...)
