Hi

If I could jump in and hijack this thread! I need to remove the CC gauges in the dash because both the switches have the bulbs gone in them.

I know it all comes off as a whole unit but I have no idea how! I guess I have to prize off the wooden surround first? Then hopefully I will reveal the screws?

Mine is a mini facelift model 98 on an S plate.

Thanks

John

Omega General Help / temp gauge
« on: 24 February 2011, 09:08:51 »
Hi

I had a bad water leak coming from the rear of the engine on my 98 mini facelift 3.0 auto. I don't know where it was coming from but something I replaced seems to have fixed it! I have replaced (amongst other things!) the coolant bridge and sensors (both). I got the temp sensor from autovaux.

My problem is with the new sensor it is running a good 10% hotter than before. It used to sit around the 90-95 mark when at full operating temp. Now it sits at 100-105! Which is quite close to the red! Closer that I would like it! It sits at 100 when cruising down the motorway but rises to 105 when in urban traffic.

Is this just a screwy temp sensor giving a miss reading and it is not actually that hot?

There is no oil in the water or mayo in the oil filler cap and the engine goes as good as it ever did!

Any one care to comment?

Well I took the plenum and gubbings off. I made a cap to pressurized the system. Pumped it up to 15PSI and expected to find the leak

Nada zip nothing no visible leak :-(

It obviously has to get hot before it leaks water :-(

What next guys :-(

I too have a coolant leak. I first noticed steam coming from under the passenger side rear of the bonnet. My first thoughts were the HBV so I took scuttle off and had a good poke around. The HBV is not the culprit. It seems to be coming from somewhere under the plenum at the back. Looks like I too will be ripping the engine apart to try and find the source of the leak... I think that its something to do with the oil cooler plate or leak from the oil cooler pipes. Typical signs of failure start with the coolant turning brown, and exhibiting slightly oil tinge to it. Mine has rusty coloured coolant sort of dark brown. Not seen any obvious oil tinge as such. Complete failure of oil cooler results in clogged radiator, and a sludge forming in the header tank. But I have not got that. Going to have to strip it down and pressure test it. It definitely does it the worst when hot and at high revvs. It seems to be pouring out empting the coolant tank after a few miles when driven normally. Drive slowly and it only uses a little bit. Some one said use a decent radiator leak fix... Comments please...

This is what mine is doing I thought it was just rusty coolant but I don't think that is the case. Complete failure results in clogged radiator, and a sludge forming in the header tank.
