One of my rear springs has broken   

The bottom couple of coils of the O/S spring have just sheared off.

Although it's an Elite, when I have the rear shocks changed, I replaced them with conventional ones - removing the S/L gubbins and swapping the rear springs out for a pair from a same aged MV6 - i.e. MFL.

My question is, can I put my old S/L springs back on the car or should I get a pair of normal springs to replace the pair that are on the car?

I have it on good authority (Steve @ Omega Spares  ) that I can use my old SL springs - so will be having them fitted tomorrow.

That's a relief as I dont have to shell out for a new set of springs.

Im doubtful of that tbh.I would check with a few more people first.My initial thought is that they will be too soft ?

Well, I've got them, no extra expense involved and will be fitting them tomorrow @ my mates workshop.

Really need the car back on the road so let's see ..............

That's what I would do   

I suspect my car is the other way round. When I first got it years & years ago, it had 'normal' shockers on instead of self levellers which I replaced with the proper self levellers. Fairly recently I discovered that my red springs may be Irmscher or some other 'go-faster' springs. It's never been a problems though.

Always, always replace in matched pairs and make sure that the tails are pointing in the right direction or they will fail rapidly.
Easy job though luckily, even if it is a bit heavy on the pocket.

Hi all,

Thanks for comments - much appreciated. Yes, will be having both springs replaced.

I got a full service printout with the car when I bought it as it had been owned by a Father/Son from a few months old (Vx Network q car), upto when I bought it. These detail all the work done on the car.

The springs were replaced @ 59k with Vx parts @ a whopping price of £119 EACH + labour + vat.  This was done in March 2007.

I then replaced these springs off the car when I had my new shocks fitted & put them in the garage. I did try to sell them on here - but no takers. It's these springs that will be going on tomorrow - only having done 17k miles.

So, I only have to pay my mate for his labour - which I am quite happy to do.

Re the point about the tails pointing the right way, what exactly do you mean by that please? I'm sure they sit into a rubber pad & the bottom end, its about 5" in diameter IIRC. Do you mean that the thin end needs to point in a particular direction at all?

Ok, so that's the TOP of the spring has to have the "end" of the coil (the short straight bit) pointing towards the rear of the car? Is that correct?

I guess that for a pair of springs that they are both the same, or is there a left and right?

no worries mate you will see what I mean when you do the job-at least easier than front

SL springs will fit, obviously, but are too soft really. There's a good chance the shocks will start to leak with those springs as the shocks will be doing all the work(so to speak) as they don't have the air bladders to support the springs. If you have standard shocks, the ideal would be to fit standard springs to match.

But needs must and all that.
