Whilst changing the water pump tonight I decided to check the timing belt using the Laser kit I bought about three years ago. Whatever I did I couldn't get the timing to line up, the timing marks were always slightly out. After checking the crank lock, I realised that it wasn't meeting the water pump correctly. It appears that the semi circle cutout is too high and the lower part is meeting the water pump first making the timing retarded for both banks. I borrowed a Sealey timing kit which fits perfectly and has shown the timimg to be miles out. The rumour of faulty laser kits appears to be true and it is the crank lock that is the faulty part.

There was a batch of these about 3 years ago that were faulty in exactly that respect - didn't line up with the water pump.

I believe they were recalled by Laser but some got sold by unscrupulous sellers so yes, it's more than a rumour.

Might be worth a call to Laser. I know they replaced some faulty ones back then. Might be too late now, but who knows?

Thanks for the offer. I won't need to replace the belt and tensioner until next year, I only needed to check settings this time.
