Bloody miss fire is back
« on: 12 April 2012, 15:51:36 »

I sometimes hate these cars, Went to a job today and while i was there it rained, then on the way home i get a missfire so it has to water on the coilpack.

Got to next job and i actually see water dripping from beneath the scuttle panel BUT not from the plastic to metal joint as thats been sealed, water is getting under the screen trim and soaking into the foam insulation.

So not a huge problem as i know the reason why BUT what a stupid bloody design.

Think i try to make up some kind of plastic cover for the HT electrics so once i seal the scuttle if it should ever leak again i wont get this dam problem, again!

Noticed mine was dripping from underneath but think its the scuttle join , must put more sealant on it  ::)

the screen trim is just a trim not a seal..the bond that holds screen in is the seal..bet water going round screen then between bond and trim

Heres food for thought.

The 'design' as it left the factory is good and water tight.

Therefore there must be something happening in the aftermarket to cause the issue.

I would wager its either poor windscreen fitting (highly likely!) or miss fitting of the scuttle panel.

The scuttle panels are buggers to seal IMO  :-\

Had mine out last year and put it back with loads of sealent and I thought I'd cracked it as the foam has been nice and dry!! Only to discover when I've stripped it down this week that the felt down the back of the engine by the scuttle join was wet and there were puddles on the dispack!!  :'(

The design may have been ok when it left the factory brand new BUT right now its a bloody pain in the a$$, i spose if better materials and the way it was held in place had been used then it wouldnt be such a problem now BUT also a design that didnt lead to HT electrics getting wet from rain water when some felt rotted would have been even better. this problem only really stems from the ridiculous possition of the coil pack which i will relocate if this dont work.

Last year i found out why my coil pack was getting wet and replaced the useless rotten foam with a nice rubber seal where the scuttle joins the metal work but water is now leaking through the joint where scuttle meets screen and not running over it.

The strip along the bottom of the screen with the slotted holes is where im going to use silicon, also around the windscreen wiper spindles too.

And i assume the sound deadening felt inder the scuttle is suposed to act as some kind of seal, which it has done for a long time but is now failing badly

AND??? yes you guessed it, as soon as i get it in bits the bloody heavens opened  >:(

I've also just found the foam seal is in pieces and i'm going to replace it.
I have also removed the large foam pad that soaks up water, that should give me a better chance of seeing where water is traveling???? Maybe???
After seeing your pic's, I am thinking of removing the screen seal and putting a new one in????

On the very early models, there was no soundproofing foam pad on the underside of the scuttle - it usually just acts as a big sponge anyway!  I think the water normally gets in at the holes for the wiper spindles.

All 3 of my omegas have had an issue with the seal coming loose and water poring off the windscreen straight into the engine bay. Original screens on all of them. But clearly there's been some scuttle fiddling going on evident by cracks in the plastic and missing clips.

However, removing the scuttle, re fitting everything and adding a bead or sealant around the metal to plastic section of the scuttle drain appears the have sorted it.

Certainly the windscreen seal has always pushed back on with no further issue.

Right, i glued a nice new rubber seal (of my 23 year old Supra that hasn't rotted like Vauxhall crap does) so i dont have to worry about that again.

Then after cleaning and de greasing all areas i refitted the scuttle onto a nice bead of silicon also around the wiper spindles too, then the long trim clip onto the base edge of the screen with silicon, then the flat trim onto that with more silicon so the area will be nice and dry.

Also i got my aircon re-gassed (properly) for free too, so all in all its been a good day  ;D
