Opinions please ref rear towing point
« on: 08 May 2016, 10:06:18 »

I spotted this the other day and it just doesn't look right to me. I have towed quite a few cars a fair distance using a pole and to me it looks like the screw attachment point is separating from the chassis.

Is there ment to be a gap or do I have reason to be concerned?
Thanks
Lee

I think it's threaded into the chassis... But I'm sure a man of your talents could stick some weld in there anyway ;)

I'd hope it is attached at multiple areas within the chassis rail but that also worries me because if it is and that gap shouldn't be there that means there's more damage/corrosion hidden within the chassis.  If however it's only attached at the end (where the gap is) it will be easy to repair and reinforce but that also worries me as I don't think I'd ever trust it again.
If that gap is supposed to be there then  I can stop worrying and just concentrate on sorting the corrosion.

I would be very wary about actually towing with a screw-in towing eye, especially if the attachment point on the other vehicle is offset. I've seen too many damaged vehicles and equipment from doing this. There are a lot of cars where the attachment point isn't particularly rigid; if you watch an E36 BMW as force is applied to the tow-eye, you can see the gap between the bumper and headlight change considerably. BMW actually recommend a loose strap around the suspension and winch-hook when winching using their screw-in eyes just in case something breaks!

I once tore the whole front off a Fiesta winching it onto a truck using the screw-in eye; there was a loud bang, and all the spotwelds on the front crossmember broke bringing the bumper, radiator etc with it. Not a good day, especially as the customer was watching :o
