Had a good drive in a 5 series BMW.
« on: 07 May 2012, 15:11:45 »

I had a good old blast in the pilots seat of the old man in law's 2000 5 series BM. It's the E39 with a straight 6 3.0 Auto.

So, my initial thoughts...

YES it's pokey, but the power delivery isn't smooth as the 3.2

All in all, it's probably quicker than the 3.2 top end / at higher revs, but, it isn't as pokey in the lower rev range.

When putting foot through the carpet, from a standing start or low speed, there is a noticible hesitation before it takes off.

On a plus point...

The autobox is better than any Omega (5 speed)

Excellent ride and handling, positive steering

Less little annoying rattles in the cabin

In summary?

If I was car shopping, it would be an option on the table. As it stands, nothing about it made me want to trade the MV6 in for one.

I'll keep my 3.2, thanks :y

I've always wondered what sort of car the Omega would be if Vauxhalls' had fitted the straight six from the Senator into it. Far simpler to work on, I wouldn't mind betting.

I thought that would of been the choice of engine for the omega , think ive seen an engine conversion to the straight 6 into the omega some where  :-\

I was a passenger in a 650bhp Monaro yesterday, comfy, fast as hell and same economy as 3.2 Omega? Soon as insurance lets me, I'm having one   :D

Manual only in this country. Auto available in Aus & US in GTO guise.
Believe or not 30mpg is easily achievable & I get 24 without any problems, urban combined & that's having a play sometimes too :-X
