Changing the Locks & Ignition Barrel key???
« on: 19 May 2012, 23:15:21 »

How much work is required to change the barrels on the omega,

The problem I have is that at some point the drivers door on my 3.2 02 plate was changed and the door lock was not swapped so I have a barrel on the door but the ignition key doesn't fit it, I have no problems using the central locking etc but the problem I have is when I was away for a few month there, I couldn't open the car as the battery was flat lucky I hadn't closed the bonnet fully so I managed to open it, put jump leads to the battery which gave me power in the system and opened the car with the remote. So i would like to change the barrels so they match so this doen't happen again. Any ideas??

If you find the guide re dismantling & cleaning the ignition barrel you'll see how it all works re the brass tumblers. There's only a limited number of different tumblers, so if you dismantle your driver's door lock, along with the tumblers from another one or two other locks, you'll be able to build a lock barrel to fit your key. Just be methodical as you strip it down, it's not difficult.  :y :y :y :y I did the same years ago with my Manta for the same reason.

So, If I open up the barrel from the ignition, and write down the numbers of the brass tumblers, can I set/copy the door barrel tumblers to the same pattern??

Is there a number on each tumbler?  :-\ :-\ When I've played with lock tumblers I've just laid them all out in front of me & tried each tumbler in each slot on the barrel. You're looking for it to be flush on either side when the key is inserted.

Yep.. The ones in the ignition barrel are, at any rate. :y

Ok, So is it just a case of replicating the same pattern and the barrels will match??

In theory.. Assuming the tumblers are numbered the same as the ignition lock.

So.. Take out ignition barrel and disassemble. Be careful here as the tumblers have springs behind them and can ping out and get lost easily.

Note the sequence of numbers on the tumblers from one end to the other. While you're at it, get a bit of fine emery cloth or similar and deburr all the tumblers, lube with a bit of graphite and reassemble.

Then get a couple of door lock barrels and disassemble, collecting all the tumblers until you have enough to rearrange into the same sequence, build a lock with the sequence you found in the ignition barrel and see how it works.

On the other hand, if the ignition barrel is original and you have the car pass you should be able to order a replacement barrel from the stealers if you quote the key number from the car pass.

If you just swap the mechanical locks over then no TechII required, but you'd be swapping door, ignition boot & possibly glove box over when all you need to do is play with the tumblers in your driver's door.
Once you've opened the lock up you'll see how easy it is to match to your existing key.  :y :y
