Government snooping plans

Totally wrong, IMHO.

It will do nothing to stop those who are really interested in criminal activity, since it is not difficult to set up anonymity. However, for the vast majority of law-abiding citizens, this is just a charter to trawl personal information and we all know how the government keeps data secure. Truly Orwellian plans which are hopefully destined to fail.

They can eavesdrop already with a warrant. This is like (in days gone by) having the address of every letter you send being recorded, with the option of looking inside if they feel like it.

Just plain wrong to me. Privacy is a valuable commodity.

Agree with all that Nick and tbh, I think they have been monitoring all wired / wireless comunication for years.
The problem is, how can they put that infomation to good use ?

In 99% of criminal cases, time is of the essence and you need to use what ever means you can to stop these acts  :(

Its a crying shame and tbh, I hate the idea of any f*cker (whether its a computer or person ) eaves dropping in on my business but how can the goverment of the day protect its people without it ?

It is necessary to say that (in relation to the substance of the OP) the more you get - the more you want.

So where does it all stop - will there be proper controls exercised over the processes used to gather, disseminate and act upon such information and more importantly, to examine the justifying reasons for seeking it in the first place?

If the practices of certain people I worked with in the past were to be followed in relation to this latest proposal, then I shudder to think of how this legislated for ability to gather information, in the way anticipated, will be abused.

It's a slippery slope, this one. :( :(

I find it hard to believe that the government are naive enough to think that seriously determined individuals and organisations intent on criminal / terrorist activity just open a gmail account and blather away to each other.

If you have a serious need to transfer information across the internet without trace or chance of interception there are plenty of freely available tools to do so. I don't doubt that the government themselves rely on such techniques to get information in and out of areas of the world where their interference is unwanted.

I seriously doubt that the proposed measures will allow so much as a Skype call to be monitored yet we will be asked to pick up the bill. >:(

Of course, they'll be rather handy to detect the minor transgressions of the otherwise lawful who don't give a second thought to encrypting their communications.

That is a tough question, but not wasting resources trying to achieve the impossible will surely make those resources available for something that actually achieves something?
