what can be removed under a mv6 bonnet
« on: 30 June 2012, 19:49:39 »

al right chaps, im just taking the heads off my mv6 as i am gonna get the snapped plug removed at an engineers shop but while ive been getting it off i wa s thining some of the stuff could be removed and disposed of to make it run a little better ive heard about the egr valve but how much do you remove and whats involved in doing it also whats the sai ive heard of it being removed but dont even know what it is, and i was thinking about also the air con because it dosnt work anyway and i probably wouldnt use it if i had it, how much of the air con can be removed, and if theres anything else thats not really needed any suggestions would be gratefully apprieciated i use it as a  daily driver but occasionaly use it on a track  :)

Depending on how much you want to spend on it and how many km's its done i'd pull both heads off  (your already doing one!) talk to a decent engineer / reconditioner and look to getting them cleaned up, valves re-set maybe ported a bit and flow benched. this is reasonably cheap and they will be able to tell you how far they can go. This just cleans up the air-fuel flow and starts to make the engine breathe a bit better. The first thing I would look at though would be to get the cams re-ground and a decent set of headers. You dont want to go to crazy though otherwise you end up having to play with the ECU etc. Then when its all back together you can look at exhaust etc. Make sure you put a new DIS pack leads and a Heater bypass valve in as well though!  The egr valve is on the left side and is basicly just a valve that lets in some of the exhaust back into the induction system. to fix this its just blanked off to stop exhaust flow off from entering back into the intake system. its blanked off rather than removed as its 1) easier and 2) the ECU gets upset about it being removed so it has to stay plugged in. The SAI pump is under the front guard and the rest of the valving is bolted next to the radiator on the front hand side, theres heaps of further info on here so i wont go into details but basicly after the car has done a few km's it can cause a few problems, (mainly melting the hose between the intake and exhaust) and general comments here seem to be that its useless anyway!
Again it all depends on what you want to spend and what shape the engine is in

Hi... this is a subject that I'm interested in, also.
From my previous experience, the following can be removed, without affecting the engine:

- SAI assembly: remove pump + rubber hoses + piping coming from the exhaust can be removed. Just leave the valve and solenoid (don't know how the ECU will react if it is missing)
- EGR assemby: remove EGR valve, cast iron duckt and cooper piping -> you will need to close of the fitting on exhaust with end cap, and blank off the hole in the intake plenum, with a steel plate. Also, you will need to get and install EGR emulator.
- aircon - if it is not operational, you can get rid of the whole assembly

SAI system certainly is bin-worthy but you need to retain the relay, & / or soelnoid air valve IIRC, to keep a load on the ECU. EGR doesn't make much odds but improves economy slightly so I wouldn't bother touching it.

All the air conditioning bits can go. Condenser in front of the rad, compressor and pipework up to the bulkhead. Not really worth trying to remove the evaporator as it's well buried in the dashboard. Need an aux belt from a non-aircon car to complete that mod.

For neatness, it'd be a good idea to rework the engine cooling electrics back to the non-aircon spec. You could probably remove the two fans in front of the rad. while you're at it. I'm guessing the one behind the rad would probably suffice for engine cooling in our climate.

If it's got a few miles on the clock it would be worthwhile getting the valves lapped into the heads while they're off. The seats are probably a little pitted and it will improve the seal and restore a bit of lost compression. Might be worth doing some light porting but any serious tuning work risks wasting money unless you know where the restrictions are IMHO.
