Also, you say the camcover gasket seems dry, so it doesn't look like that's the culprit, or that there any problems with this work?

I wonder if it is indeed, the main rear oil seal  :-\

What's it like around the bellhousing?

I wonder if it is indeed the rear crank seal then.

My 3.2, which has always had sqeuaky clean breathers in it's last few years of OOF ownership, was losing 0.5 litres per 700 miles via the rear crank seal, until I recently changed it!

If it's only 0.5 litres per 1000 miles or so, I would honestly be tempted to leave it be, and top up when needed, as, without meaning any offence whatsoever, you could end up spending more than the value of the car fixing it...

thats my thoughts James, there's only so much money you can throw at a relatively inexpensive car, and I seriously appreciate the help and advice you gave us when you came over.   (and the chance to drive your 3.2) :y

I couldnt believe it, when after seeing fresh oil under the car's parking spot at Tesco on Saturday, yesterday I took my daughter to the park, and when I reversed out of the space, it was dry where the car had been standing!  Is it possible to have an intermittent oil leak? lol

I think you've made a good point tho James, it will probably be cheaper for now to just keep an eye on the oil level, top it up as required, and then maybe look at doing the crank seal in a year or so if it gets any worse - its been an expensive few months, what with tyres, cambelt/waterpump, LPG service and engine service - as well as all the interior bits I've got for it from Twiglet and Phil Morgan which need fitting too.

I'm still really pleased with the car, and well chuffed with the way it coped with a near 2000 mile trek round France fully loaded with people and luggage :)
