So, according to the news the House of Lords is to be drastically reduced and a vote by proportional representation brought in to decide who deserves this 'perk'. Sadly some Labour Party idiot with his head up his rea end and so being blind to the real world has spoken out that it is a waste of our money when in fact the House of Lords is based  not on actual worth but appears to be on a 'jobs for the boys (and their decendants, as if there is not far more wasted on the Lords salaries, staff and expenses to begin with) to spend time in the House of Commons in pushing and debating this modernisation of the House of Lords through and getting it onto the statute laws. Where has this idiot gained his information that they cost us nothing? Of course they do because they do not do it for free! Lets us not forget that it is we, the taxpayer who pay the salaries for those unelected 'Lords', their hanger on staff and for the extra perks they get while supposedly serving us in the House of Lords when the fact is most are asleep in the House and also life because they are so old they have lost all touch with reality. Many are also mere hangers on because some distant relation was given the title of Lord for their real efforts for this country. Their progeny and relatives who now have gained the title because it was 'handed down' have made or given no such service to us, those who now pay their huge and probably undeserved salaries. They are parasites living at our expense.
I am not against retaining the House of Lords as such because it is our heritage but it is high rime that the perasites of the system were removed because we sinply cannot afford them the luxury of their undeserved pampered luxurious lives. Comes to it they should serve the country for free, both salaried and expenses for having the honour of the title!
House of Lords....what a big con that place is! >:(
Is everyone happy to see their hard earned taxes used to pamper these funnily dressed idiots :D :o blather on about the price of port? It wouldn't be so bad if they had decent shapely legs  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I agree with House of Lords reform to a smaller number, half elected and half based on worth. The problem I have with it as a buffer to the Commons is that is based on Party Politics and the allegiance is to the Party not the country. I would like to see indepenent elected Lords and those Lords of worth with no bias to any Political Party. No member of the House of Lords should serve in Cabinet or hold any postion in a political party.

As far as I'm aware there are no hereditory Lords in the Upper House following New Labours reforms and what we have now is a House of Lords stuffed (800!!  :o) full of political appointees!!  >:(  and of course the government of the day will appoint as many of it's benefactors, cronies, supporters and 'has beens' as possible!!!  >:( >:( >:(

I'm not convinced we need elected Lords (or Senators  ::)), as we have a disinterested and apathetic electorate in this country. :-\ However I'd certainly support proposals to slim down The Lords and they should cut it down to about 300 members.  Appointments to The Lords would be made by an independant body, and 'Lords' would have to be at least 40 years of age and attained a certain degree of success and experience in their lifetime!! ie have had a proper job or business.  Political party members need not apply!!  ;)
