2003 3.2 manual not firing - codes
« on: 11 July 2012, 18:39:30 »

Jumped in today to pick Woman up from work, it spins quite freely on the starter but will not fire.

Codes from the pedal trick are - 0420 and 0430 (precat issue, of course)
0704 and 0571 - brake switch malfunction and clutch switch malfunction.

Neither of the last two should stop it starting, should they?

My only other thought is that it's currently parked facing downhill and it's been a while since it's had a drink - would parking downhill stop [the small remaining amount of] fuel from getting pumped through?

Could be, Saloon or Estate?, the Estates are terrible for parking on a slope with low fuel.

Saloon. Handily, it's butted up against the garage door so I can't just roll it onto the flat...

Manual, (cough) with the starter (un cough) I know it shouldn't be done but will get you a few yards out the way.

Pfft, I find it much more satisfying to shift it by hand. Much to the entertainment of the neighbours... especially once I got it on the flat, and it still wouldn't bloody fire.

Next steps?

As both switches have malfunctioned, I'd check the loom...

Whereabouts? Am I going to have to do some yoga into the footwell?

First look at the loom shows no problem.

The brake and clutch codes were in fact present a while ago, last time the spanner light came on, judging by the Pile of Random Papers in the workshop.

I've preliminarily* ordered a crank sensor, on the grounds that a- it's likely to go at some point, even if it isn't at fault now and b- I've got very little diagnosis time, so if I order it now it'll arrive by the time I've got a day off to fit it.

My thinking is, it has had quite a long crank time the last two or three times I've started it, a good few seconds longer than normal - reading around, this seems common with crank sensor failure.

Before I go and recheck that I've not missed any codes, where else should I be looking?
