It has been known for tech2 to refuse access to the hid levelling ecu(or whatever it's called) if there is a fault. Seems that particular system shuts down completely, on occassion.
Might be better to visually check the sensors, and hid motors and nearby wiring for faults visually first. Then seek a tech2 on here if nothing obvious is found.

Removing the head light is easier if accessing the motors.

I didn't think that it was right that the error message should have stayed on! In all honesty it was worked on by a mate of mine, but he's also doing the MOT on Friday so I'll pass on the advice given here and check that everything that could be a fault had been checked.

Thanks for all the pointers so far, I'll report back on Friday.

If all hes done is to wind the adjusters to align the lights properly .. that is not "fixed" .. and once you get the sensors fixed they will need aligning again !!

I've just got a text from my mate who worked on the car and he's asked:

Are there any diagrams to show wiring up the new level sensor with the new piece of wiring loom that came with it so i can double ckeck i have wired it up correcly.

I know he had problems when doing the work, so if such a diagram exists then that would be a great help. Of course we'll check all other possibilities as well...!

I've just read back on my posts and it wasn't at all clear what was done to the car...!

Basically, a new headlight levelling control unit was fitted. I believe it was the whole 'package', if that's the right term, as it cost £167 inc VAT from Vauxhall. When fitting it, my mate had problems with the wiring as he said that the new unit had been modified slightly from the old parts on my 2000 model 2.5 V6 Elite Auto. There was some messing around with it until he got the headlight levels right (beforehand they were directing far too low) but the error message is still displaying on the dash.

Before the work was done, you would get the regular Brakelight Check message appear and then when the car was driven the Low Beam / Fld Vision would appear after a few seconds (but only after the car moved). After the work, the Low Beam error instantly appears after clearing the Brakelight Check, which would indicate that the system is indeed not wired up / connected properly.

After the feedback on here it's evident that there's something amiss, but I think the main issue is the wiring of the unit itself. If anyone has a diagram showing us how to wire the unit up properly then that would be a great help!

New sensors are, I believe, different design with different wiring to the car loom. So it might follow that he had issues.

Tbh, given the above and the costs involved, used parts might be a better option. Cheaper, plug and play, although obviously some shortened life span.

But as you say, progress here is knowing its not fixed. At all.

As Entwood says, if the lights are adjusted to the correct level, with a non working level system, once fixed, the lights will be WAY too high, and dazzling. The system is designed to keep the lights level, reguardless of the cars incline to the road. If faulty the system defaults to fully "low field of vision" to save blinding everyone.

I take it the suspension sensors where visually checked and no ball joints or sockets where hanging off?

Thanks for the info chrisgixer, it's proving really useful (as are the other responses). I don't suppose you know of anywhere I can get a guide or diagram on how to properly wire in the new sensor to the car loom? I'm sure it's not impossible to do but clearly we're struggling at the mo!!

To all...

Does the Haynes not cover hids in its numerous wiring diags?

As Haynes only covers pre face lift, and I don't know what year hids where introduced, I'm not sure hids will be covered. :(

IIRC HIDs were introduced in 97/98 with the mini facelift MV6/Elite.

Hi everyone

We now have the front sensor wired up properly and that is working fine. The error message has now been wiped from the dash display but the headlights are still not auto levelling as they should do. We've taken one of the headlight motors out and tested it. The good news is that it worked fine so we can only assume that the issue is to do the ECU. We think the sensors are sending the correct messages but the ECU is not relaying this onto the headlight motors.

I understand that the ECU is located under the driver's side front wing but would anyone know exactly where it is and the easiest way of getting to it? Any photos showing where it is would be even better, if possible!

Thanks very much in advance.

If the error message on the dash has gone, then the fault is fixed.

If that's the case you now need to adjust the headlights to the correct level as mot spec.

Or is there more to it?

As its been severely pissed around with, wiring wise, probably by someone who hasn't got a clue, I'd start again from scratch.

Wiring diagram is in the Haynes Book of Bullshit, under 'Later Models'.

I'm not aware of any ECU wiring changes from 1998 to 2003, although the sensors had a new plug towards the end, so the Haynes wiring is still valid.

For the record, I've never seen or heard of an Omega HID ECU failing. In fact, ABS aside, failed ECUs on Omegas are like rocking horse poo, so be immediately suspicious of the capabilities of anyone suggesting otherwise ;)
