Astra dti
« on: 07 October 2012, 23:08:37 »

I know of a car going , a 2000 plate astra dti 1.7 but seller is saying its troublesome to start but once started it smokes a bit on start up but runs fine after that . But the car wont start again unless its cooled right down .
Mileage 170k
Would this be a simple fix or should it  be avoided  :-\ , owned a similar car a year ago and was 100% reliable  :)

At that kind of mileage and with potential for a replacement engine needed it would have to be very cheap or it is not worth it. Plenty of mk4s about. They are a good car, and there is still plenty to choose from.

With a diesel you could try changing the glow plugs, worked wonders on a 1.3cdti my mate owns. But the lack of starting while hot would worry me, low compression ?

Crank sensor is know to cause such issues on these.

These engines are good for 300K plus miles of cared for so it would be very dependent on the condition  :y

Ok thanks folks , the car is very cheap . Mantahatch the low compression you mention sounds worrying and something i never thought about but guess could be an issue  :-\ and mark 300k sounds promising but would have to check the service history to be sure . Not being able to replace the glow plugs or crank sensor before its bought would be a gamble on knowing it would be ok , mite be better to look for something thats running good without the issues this one has  :y
