Royal Marines arrested.....
« on: 11 October 2012, 23:03:56 »

I sincerely hope that this is a serious incident worthy of this action and not a case of political correctness or some jobsworth desk jockey trying to climb the greasy pole...  :(

Thats all right then....they can shoot us whilst dressed in 'friendly uniforms' but we can't shoot back at insurgents.

Soldiers, shooting the enemy.

Very un-PC.

On the news this morning there was a circular discussion on "rules of engagement".

e.g. A possible enemy walks up to a group of soldiers, pulls his gun and spraysd the area with bullets, then lays down gun and runs off. Not permitted to open fire on him.

It just goes to reinforce the difficult scenario our soldiers operate in as well as have a good likelyhood of being killed.

WHAT !! A British Marine shooting dead a dirty Afgan weasel, and during a conflict as well.
Give them a medal and more ammunition to carry on this service. Well done lads

Less we forget how many Green on Blue attacks take place on a daily basis.

Well, at least nothing has changed since I left ... or in the 38 years whilst I served ...

RoE are known, published, and adhered to at all times ... yup .. they seem unfair to many .. but they are there for a purpose...

Minimum force should be applied at all times and in all circumstances.

Not much force to squeeze the trigger  ;)

Playing devils advocate here for a minute. If an enemy combatant is disarmed and captured, the captors are responsible for his safety & welfare, under the Geneva convention.
If they were to capture, disarm and then shoot him dead, they would be guilty of murder, and tbh thats the way it needs to be.Otherwise when we are engaged in warfare against a foreign army (as opposed to terrorists) our POW,s would be killed in cold blood as a matter of routine.
Terrorists change the game altogether though. They arent brave enough tto wear a uniform, and dont play by any rules whatsoever, which makes the lines somewhat blurred.
Dont know what happened in this case,we will have to wait and see I suppose.

Apparently the Afghanistani 'authorities', and human rights namby pambies are pleased with this! Where were all these spineless people for the last 30 years? Too scared of the Taliban, but it's ok to pick on British Forces. The irony is, is that the relative security brought about by our forces has allowed this situation to come about. A good deed is repaid by a bad deed as they say.

I woult tend to agree. As a serving soldier said to me a couple of months ago "Afghanistan is Afghanistan.Always has been and always will be". If we just pull out now it can easily be argued that all those poor souldiers died in vain, but the problem with staying until the job is finished is that its unlikely to ever be finished from what I can see,and if it was finished it appears likely that they will revert to type as soon as our troops are out of the way.
The problem there is connected with Muslim fundamentalism, and the civilised world (civilised Muslims included)need to decide if its going to unite to destroy this Barbaric cult or not. If so,a different approach will be needed I think. The afghanistan operation has so far lasted longer than both world wars put together, with no outcome so far. Time for a rethink ?
