Car shakes after 70mph
« on: 19 November 2012, 22:30:39 »

Hi, my Omega has started to vibrate when I get to 70 mph, it feels like the full car is vibrating. The car passed its MOT last month with no issues/advisories. It seems to vary in intensity but only after 70 mph, driving around the town nothing is noticable and there are no warning lights coming on. Any ideas please? Im new to the forum. Thanks

First off check all 4 tyres for damage especially on the inner edges, then check wheel nuts are all correctly torqued. If nothing wrong so far, swap the front wheels for the back ones and see if the problem is the same. If no joy, then have the wheels balanced. :-\

sounds like steering I have it between 70 and 80 and I'm almost certain it is the wheels out of balance.  You can feel it through the steering wheel and it disappears either side of it's particular range.  My front  tyres are on the second rubber on the inside edges (camber was way out) and are being finally replaced tomorrow so hopefully that fixes it

Car shake is often rear wheel balancing. Steering wheel shake is front wheel balancing.

When balancing, also get them to check for damage and properly round rims and tyres.

In fact, ask to see each rim spun on the balancer your self to check. Tyre fitters care little IME.

My steering wheel shake has just gone now the front comb over tyres have gone. I got two new 235/4517 WESTLAKE (aka Goodride) SV308 97W XL, £63 each, fitted, valved and balanced. Uni directional, all season (Mud & Snow), rated C and C for wet grip and fuel economy and 72db for noise (seem much quieter on concrete to me than the old ones). Very pleased with them, will put them on the rear when those go.  I am most impressed though by the new rating system - much more expensive tyres score a lot lower.  The only drawback I can see is their land/sea ratio.  They have a lot of sea (presumably to clear the mud and snow) so I expect the land will wear out sooner. But at £63 each I don't mind.
