Tailgate lock barrel
« on: 04 December 2012, 06:47:30 »

Ok, have a stuck lock barrel in my tailgate which I have now dismantled. Done it before years ago but can not remember a thing about it.

I removed the unit from car, took the locking ring out which released the large spring, then some other parts were off too, these are not any problem, pretty obvious how they go back. Knocked the bright chrome cylinder off and the the unexpected happened: no matter how careful I was "something" sprung away. No idea what, no idea where. Looking at the barrel it seems to be lacking the small spring and ball, similar can be seen in ignition lock how-to pictures. Is there such parts? One other option is that it was one of the brass parts that flew away because one slot is empty  ??? The whole barrel was so full of crud and other brass parts were un-movable so this is not likely that one of those would have gone...

So, anyone got any pictures of dismantled tailgate lock barrel or a list of parts it should include? And does someone know if a door lock barrel is the same part as I have found a NEW barrel for Vectra/Omega door lock for less than a tenner.

One option is to find a barrel from a scrap yard and try to dismanlte it more carefullyl without losing any parts  :y

Do it with the lock inside a large transparent bag. That way you won't lose the pieces.

Yes, lesson learned and thanks for this good idea  :y Have so far found the small spring but the ball is somewhere in the garage  >:(

Also wonder why one of the brass parts is missing, these locks should be fully "equipped" when new?
