Albs will be along shortly to confirm I'm sure, but I believe his preferred method is a 6ft length of 3x3 timber and a transit van...  ;)

I think it depends what you are planning to do with the wheels afterwards?

I get them for melting down to make stuff, so I just run the circular saw through the lot - wheel and tyre.

If i'm planning on using the wheels, I just take them to the tyre fitting place, have them fit new tyres and dispose of the old ones.

2 tyre levers - break the seal by releasing all the air and running your motor onto the tyre (missing the wheel) - ;)

If it's just for scrap, I cut through the the bead of the tyre with a reciprocating saw (usually damaging the wheel rim in the process!) Not sure the tyres would be any good for a barrier afterwards though because thay get quite flimsy one the bead is cut.
