Very useful system in off peak times but a living hell in the rush hour.

I have great memories of the underground when I was a young lad. my mum used to take us out to London for days out. one of my favourite parts was going on the underground so much so I used to beg my mum if we could get off at upminster on the Lts line and ride the underground into central London :)

I'd rather drive. Avoids having to use the Chiltern Slug as well.

Although, given a choice, I'd just prefer to avoid London completely.

They used condensing engines which were standard steam engines, but they had extra pipework that took the exhaust steam away into the water tanks.  There was however still an amount of sooty exhaust that filled the tunnels, which were usually vented, but then came the electric units which dispensed with all that much to the relief of the London passengers! :D :D :D ;)

Strangely enough the London Underground did continue to use steam engines, in the form of ex-GWR, ex-BR Western Region Class 5700 0-6-0 tank engines, until 1971 for shunting duties. I believe 13 such engines were used from the late 1950s to 1971, and were numbered from L89 to L99.  L90,94,and 95 all worked until 1971.  Six of the ex-LT engines went into preservation. ;)

I have returned home now and I have found this photograph of London Transport 0-6-0PT number L94 in it's glorious crimson red LT livery:

In addition this is one of the original Metropolitan Railway A Class 4-4-0T condensing engine No.23 of 1866.  Note the pipes going from the top of the cylinders to the side tanks:
