Where Europe is becoming the unemployment capital of the world with an average of 11.3% and Spain and Greece fighting to see who can reach 30% for unemployment and over 60% for youth unemployment, a socialist Spanish MEP has introduced a proposal that has been approved by MEPs and they are now urging the EU commission to enact a law as soon as possible.

In Spain when you make somebody redundant you have to pay 45 days pay for every year of service. Where many companies in Spain are having a hard time and having to make people redundant the cost of this is pushing them over the edge into liquidation, so they all loose their jobs. One of the reasons unemployment is so high in Spain is nobody wants to employ people due to the cost and potential liabilities involved.

So this very stupid Spanish socialist MEP had decided the best solution is to make it compulsory for companies that are making somebody redundant, they must find them a new job, including paying for retraining, counselling where they might be depressed over being made redundant, coaching on CV writing and job interview techniques etc, etc.

This is why we need to leave this EU lunacy and why despite all of the Europhile fanatic scare stories, investment and jobs will flood into the UK due to once we are free of the EU, supply-side reforms making us much more competitive. This is why Turkey, being on the EU's doorstep is doing well with similar wages to Eastern Europe without all of the EU industrial and social laws and directives.

Companies will go where costs are competitive without excessive red tape.

The UK on the other hand is the complete opposite.Employer goes bust with immediate effect,doesnt pay employees a penny in wages or redundancy,then the Government pays it out from taxpayers money,which imo is also completely wrong.More and more employers are using this tactic,and imo the directors should have their property confiscated to help foot the bill.
Ther Spanish situation (assuming they dont have a loophole to do the same) is utterly ludicrous though.

It is a well known fact that once you get a contract in Spain you are "made". Firing laws are difficult and costly. The present lot(Conservatives) are trying to address this but there is a lot of inertia.

Plus just where are the jobs going to come from. Nowhere until Spain leaves the Euro.

It may sound preposterous but Rajoy(our esteemed leader) is possibly playing a clever game. Getting money to bail out the banks and then waiting for the right moment to leave the Euro. I bet they have practised the scenario.

Greece to leave the Euro in 2013 and Spain in 2014 because of the impossibility of creating employment.. Sure there would be inflation but tourism would balloon (still Britains favourite destination with justification). And all the unsold houses would get snapped up by bargain hunting Europhiles

My company pays 7 weeks per year of service for redundancy - we are private non government so try to do right thing. If you have to make someone redundant who has done 10 years it can take over 9 months or longer to find an equivalent job and 70 weeks pay is not a bad balance - yes some may get a job quickly - others do not. Assistance is given as well with cv writing etc and counselling. We would of course draw the line at finding another job outside of the organisation unless the reason for redundancy was linked to outsourcing of functions. I think UK companies can do better to be responsible employers.
