Could somebody point me in the right direction to a safe bit of free software to find out how much ram I have and what I can upgrade to.

bios must report the amount of ram when the computer is switched on.. also task manager will give info on performance tab..
 
and easy way of finding the correct type rams is to find the mainboard manual.. if non-existent discuss your  motherboard model (must be written on board/also bios will report when its switched on) with uncle google

Unless it's a Mac, in which case download MacTracker and it'll tell you everything.

That should show you how much memory you have.

Is the computer 'branded' (i.e. Dell, HP, etc)? If so then use the Crucual or Kingston advisor tools: http://www.crucial.com/uk/

If it's not branded then you'll need to know the model of your motherboard, or try the Crucial System Scanner: http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/

Hi aaronjb, Thanks for the above.I think I have a problem with my computer as I tried to run the system scanner and I get the error message IE cannot find it ?.

I have found this problem before any ideas plse. Also how do I do a screen capture so I can put it up and you can see what I get,

Its a old dell optiplex gx620 sff. with 1gb ram

No point going beyond 3Gb on a 32bit Windows desktop, although 4Gb will mean you have a bigger penis when down the pub telling your mates .  32bit Windows desktop editions can only "see" 4Gb maximum, and technical reasons knock this down to about 3.2Gb in reality.  64bit Windows have larger data structures, so not any benefit in using 64bit unless you have significantly over 4Gb TBH

Just a follow up on this I tried to run systemscanner and it keeps coming up with the following.
I dont see why it doesnt work as it worked fine thru my laptop on wifi.

Might be something to do with your download or security settings as its an '.exe' file. copy the exe from your  laptop across to the PC and try.
