As an aside, does it have its battery cover fitted? One of mine needed the firewall patching as water had gotten under the battery tray. On the face of it not a big deal, but there are a few ecus behind the glovebox/above the passenger footwell/beneath the battery :-\

I've had two, and have fitted the engines to other cars(2 Capris, a mk2 Granada and a Superminx). There is a diagnostic port in the engine bay that you plug a 'code reader' into. This is basically an LED that you count the flashes on, and look up the fault in a list. I probably still have one somewhere that you're welcome to. But, I'm in France until the weekend so it will be a while until I can dig it out. I also have Practical Mewchanics article on diagnosing the 2.9 which is very handy; I'll happily scan it for you.
Be advised that 2.9 are EEC4, and have a very limited diagnostic facility. Much of it can be done with a multi-meter and some swearing. Noid lights for the injectors are also worth a go.

What is it actually doing?
