Key barrel
« on: 06 March 2013, 08:28:37 »

Hello everyone

The ignition retaining clip on the key barrel on the Omega has broken off, meaning each time I remove the key the barrel comes out also. I am unable to find my key code to enable me to purchase one with the correct combination from Vauxhall but I do believe that you can order a barrel and key which will work, just means you have different keys for the car, one to open it the other to start it.
The question is will the other key for the ignition need to be programmed or will it as they say "work straight from the box". Not fussed about having two seperate keys especially as Vaux World sell them for £17.00 compared to Vauxhall charging £77.00.

Cheers

Which bit has broken?  :-\ The barrel is held by the catch that you depress with your small allen key/welding rod http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90600.0
If it is that bit that's broken on yours, I'd rebuild A N Other barrel with the tumblers from your barrel so you can retain your old key.

Hi ya
Yes that is the bit that is broken. Thanks for the offer, but I need the car for work etc and since it still works I will need to swap it over straight away.

I meant .... if I was you  :) I wasn't offering, although if you were close by, I would.  :y  :y

It'll take you half an hour to swap the tumblers over.  ;)

Yes, can't see it taking much longer to use a.n.other barrel, to be honest, and it'll be much cheaper.

You need a barrel with key, otherwise it's a challenge getting it apart!

It's pretty straightforward to move your lock levers into the new barrel (make sure you maintain the same order of levers and be very careful not to lose any of the little springs!

It's worth deburring them with a bit of wet and dry and perhaps lubricating with a bit of graphite powder while you're at it.

Strip the lock inside a large clear plastic bag. That way the twangy bits don't reach orbit.

I'd be re-assembling the donor lock a couple of times for practice and checking it works before attempting the actual job. But then I've not had much luck with that sort of fiddly job

I think I've still got the springs out of mine from when I replaced the tumblers in my barrel ...... they came with their own new spring  :-\
