OBD 2 ?

Looking to buy a cheapish code reader for my middle son as he has just been accepted on a auto electronics apprenticeship, around the £100 mark just to get him started with the basics. Not sure what to look for so any help will be great full. I do know that different makes need different plugs but that is as far as my knowledge goes. Please reply in layman terms not tech jargon that i wont understand

For EOBD (Euro version of OBDII), all the plugs are the same, as the connector is standardised.

Some are better than others, ones that can do live data are better. And make sure its compatible with the cars you wish to use it on.


Most generic kit can only do engine, and transmission of some cars. Nothing else.

Cheers for that. He will only need a basic one to start with, after 6 months if the company is happy with him they will supply the equipment and van he will need. Think most of their work is for multi dealers in the area

I have a Sealey VS8700 that will read all the engine codes and erase them plus it has freeze frame data etc.  It is now very basic and there are many similar types for £50 or less now.

Second that - great bit if kit.

I find being on a laptop can be a plus point, large screen export of data to Excel etc

You do need to have a laptop however or it makes it an expensive option!

The GS500 seems to be available for about £25 now. I imagine that means it is slightly out of date :-\ (like the Omega?  ::))

I had a look at the Autel website and there appear to be far more capable devices available now at around £100.
