Bonding strap
« on: 29 March 2013, 12:38:57 »

While working under the new shed, I came across a bonding strap on the passenger side / 6" forwards of the front bottom arm bolt which was connected to the chassis but the other end was rammed up behind the plastic tray.
I presume that the other end should be bolted to the engine block somehow but I can't see where  :-\

Now on a cold morning, the starter turns over a little slow for my liking and the CID screen seems a little dim first thing after a start so i'm thinking that this has something to do with it.
I haven't checked the charge rate yet  ;)

Would it be a problem if I removed what's left of the bonding strap and relocated it to the drivers side, repaired the strap and connected it to one of the alternators securing bolts  ?
That way the starter / alternator / engine block would have a better connection to the chassis earth ?

TIA

IIRC the other end of the strap is connected to the block/oil sump area together with the support bracket (same bolt) for the A/C pipes just below the A/C compressor. If you remove the plastic shield (4 fixings) you will see the other end of the strap. The strap on mine is perished and in very poor condition, needs replacing. The fixing on the block is also not particularly robust (I noticed all of this whilst replacing the A/C compressor).

I have not had any issues with starting or slow engine turn over when starting (even with the corroded strap). The fix you mention should provide the same function but may not resolve the issue?

I know what you mean  :)
The car does very short journeys at the moment.  Maybe 6 mile trip then sat still for 11 hour then back again with the lights / heaters on so it barely getting time to replace any juice from the battery.

I've got a clamp meter somewhere that I need to dig out and play with  :-\

To save me starting a new thread, where about is the tdu relay for the rear fag lighter ?
Iirc, that has been known to drain batteries so might be a good thing to check next.
