New 2-din head unit and car computer
« on: 01 April 2013, 20:43:19 »

I am planning on replacing my stereo, but still want to have working buttons on steering wheel. I am thinking about getting these:

http://www.dndservices.co.uk/product.php?productid=5119&cat=21&page=1
http://www.dndservices.co.uk/product.php?productid=3285
http://www.dndservices.co.uk/product.php?productid=316&cat=0&page=1
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Gj4yDdCQ92D/p_023NY800W/Blaupunkt-New-York-800.html (<-- not sure yet)

So I've read various topics here on OOF and I get that with those patches I can still use the buttons with the new stereo, but what about the car's computer (to check mpg etc.) and built-in display?

OK, you will have to remove that, put in a correctly configured MID, replace the wiper stalk, and do some minor wiring (3 wires)

So you mean that the comp would be controlled via the wiper stalk, if I recall correctly some stalks have buttons for that? And could you tell me more about that correctly configured MID, like where can I get that and possible cost if you can? Thank you :)

Yes it does but I believe I can get one from somewhere if I really want to however, it was only an example, I'm not yet sure, I also have to put aside some money for it, so I have some time to consider different units. But thank you for your recommendation, I will consider it :)

But my main question remains still:

I currently have the color built-in sat-nav

It'be really nice if someone smart could make something like a guide for doing all that (wiper stalk and wiring) or is there a topic already about that which I haven't found?

I forgot to ask why/how does MID need to be modified, and why can't I keep my current CID?

Ok so I did some research and now I have some other questions lol :D

If I get an MID display from a car that hasn't been equipped the same as mine, it needs configuration, otherwise it does not need config?
Can I get it configured at some place that does car electrics in general, or do I have to find someone special?

I think that's all actually :P

It doesen't really seem that difficult to do once I have all the parts. Replace display, replace wiper stalk and replace stereo :P

And thank you mr. TheFatShadow, seems you replied a lot with the same answer, shame I didn't find these topics before I made my own..

Yes, use the wiper stalk with the S and R buttons, and a grey plug MID. The MID will need programming to match your exact config (engine, gearbox, HIDs, preheaters etc etc).

The wiring is 3 wires from the stalk, 2 go direct to MID, 3rd to 0v IIRC. Pretty trivial stuff for anyone compitent enough to consider wiring in a new stereo :y

On a related note, if you have Bose, you need to replace all the speakers and the Bose amp, as these are not compatible with aftermarket stereos.
