Slight whining noise under acceleration
« on: 15 April 2013, 12:50:12 »

As the subject really. Yesterday I noticed a slight whining sound when accelerating. It doesn't start immediately. You hear it initially at around 2000-3000rpm then it appears to go away then comes back again around 4000-4500rpm roughly. It seems to be louder if you accelerate harder. If you accelerate really gently its hardly noticeable. At any point as soon as you lift of the gas it stops. Also hear it now and then at motorway speeds again when overtaking etc.

My initial thought was Auto box but I'm aware it could be a number of things like a belt tensioner, diff, bearings.

Anyone have any ideas? or some easy ways to narrow it down? The car has just been through an MOT last week but I doubt things lift the diff will get checked.

Cheers  :y

Aux Belt, Water Pump, Alternator etc would be my first check, but not suggesting you drive the car without the aux belt off.

Cheers, I kind of thought if it were related to a belt driven component you would get a contant whine through the rev band but I'm no expert.

Is there a chance it could be the gearbox or differential?

Not necessarily, engine load, revs etc, noise could be anything but always best to start with the easy ones.

Ok, something else to check ta, I'll admit it really doesn't sound like air but you never know. The best way I can describe it is gearbox whine when you listen to a race car but obviously not as loud and not continuos.

Has the box been off before - some people are lazy on refit, and do it wrong, which can cause the TC to make noises

Autobox never been touched apart from oil top up.

What annoys me is problems only started after MOT. 2 bulbs failed on the way home from the MOT and that's the first time in 6 years. Now this new noise!!

The only thing I have done with it recently is clean the filter on the washer pump.

Jobs done on MOT were brake pipes to rear and track rod end. Not sure if the proximity to anything has disturbed something?

Well its been back in the garage today and all they could find was a loose heat shield on the exhaust which was hanging off, its been removed and the noise appears to have stopped? I'm very confused by that and to be honest I have only had a very short drive in it to listen so I may have missed it. Fingers crossed its gone though.  :-\
