Weird voltage problems on my 3.2
« on: 21 April 2013, 11:52:21 »

Just dropped the missus off at work with the car running fine.
As I pulled away, the battery light started to glow  :(
Within a few hundred yards, the battery light came on very bright, the ABS/TC lights lit up very bright and the dash went completely dead  :(
The CID's instant mpg reading stuck at 28mpg.

As I coasted down the hill, the dash lights disappeared and the dash clocks started working.

The car was drivable even though the gearbox was stuck in limp mode.

Got the car home and used my slightly dodgy Chinese friend and looked at the live data.

Ecu voltage was 14.8 (at idle)     17.2 (with revs applied)
Got the lad to check the voltage with a multimeter at the battery.
Readings were 14.4 (at idle)      16.8 (with revs applied)

The car has a 2013 c/w CID fitted.
Since I've had it, the satnav disc would eject when the car was cold and the CID used to be dim for a few minutes until the car warmed up.

Am I looking at the symptoms of a dodgy voltage regulator which is playing games with the electronics ?

Is the car safe to drive if I stick as many loads on as possible (to keep the voltage down) ?

TIA

QUESTION ................. Is the 3.2's alternator the same as the 2.6's ??

17.2V will see your battery explode quite rapidly!

I wouldn't drive it until it was sorted!!!

Ice Mode  :y

Even then, I wouldn't risk it.  The battery (if it explodes) will make a right old mess of the engine bay, bonnet, N/S/F wing.

Yep, dont risk it, regulator gone, park up time till done or Alternator replaced, if going to Garage disconnect Alternator before setting off.  ;)

Trade club says yes. Trade club also says that 2.6/3.2 can have either 120A OR 140A. Chris Gixer discovered that they are not (easily) interchangeable because the terminals are different.
