Plenum & breather bridge query
« on: 17 June 2013, 11:42:04 »

Hi All

As an additional part of the initial finding where the water leak was, was to do cam cover gaskets as they were contributing to the general oily state of the car!

Last night I spent a good couple of hour cleaning the breather bridge sections which were blocked with oil and what can be best described as a black grease of the consistency of that used on the lifting wires of mobile cranes! Poor maintenance I expect :-[

Which brings me onto my questions, the guide says to clean the pipes that connect to the back of the breather bridge, I assume you have to disconnect from where they go & will what they connect to need cleaning too? And will there be a breather box on the 2.6 as the guide refers to a 3.2? It's raining good style at the moment so cant go and look without getting the inside the cams wet  :(

Many thanks

Paul

It's hard to get to the box itself for cleaning, but the state of the rubber hoses that attach to the breathers will give you an indication as to condition. Usually the 'mayo' is evident. The guide should be the same for the 2.6  :y

The best way to attack the breather bridge is to remove the whole plenum and spray carb cleaner into the ports at the rear of the bridge IMHO. If you remove the bridge from the plenum you will disturb the seals between it and the plenum and throttle body so you will need new replacements. If it's so solid that your carb cleaner doesn't emerge into the plenum and in front of the throttles you may need to remove the bridge and poke something into the vent holes to unblock them.

Once that's been done once, I tend to just spray some carb cleaner into ports at the back of the bridge each time I service the car, then use a long piece of hose to blow into each port to ensure it's clear.

.. and to answer the question you actually asked. ;)

If the rubber hoses from the breather box are clogged, remove them and give them the carb cleaner treatment. As to the breather box behind the driver's side head itself, don't bother to remove it. Often the small hole in the barb onto which the smaller hose attaches is blocked but this can easily be unblocked with a pin and some carb cleaner. If there is debris in the larger hole, just spray some carb cleaner in and poke it out with a screwdriver.

If you do this work when you change the oil you can then give it a short run and then drop the oil and hopefully any debris you poked into the crankcase will come out with the oil.

Many thanks Jonny & Kevin.  :y

Had to remove breather bridge but all clear now as are bagpipes  :)

There is a split in the rubber hose 3mm inside diameter 9mm outside that connects the white ?vacuum pipe to resonance pipe switch over valve to the solenoid for same. Is this pipe specific to Vauxhall or is is something I can get a length of from ebay & if so what's it called other than pipe?  I know that there is another bit split somewhere, I saw it when taking plenum off ::)

Cheers,

Paul
