hard to explain what the noise sounds like in text... can only say its a clunk.. only when turning wheel not travelling along... no vibrations when driving or any wandering about..

If its just when turning the steering wheel you need to be looking at the steering mechanism. Column, steering box, and ball joints.

I'd suggest jacking the car onto stands, steering lock off, and turn the road wheels from under neith while holding each ball joint in turn, feeling for knocks, shocks due to a dry ball joint, or for any play. Not forgetting the steering idler and pitman arm to box and the box itself.
You'll see where the box and idler bracket are bolted to the body. These bolts csn give a creak that is so low frequency that it feels like a knock.

Also, from the drivers footwell you can feel the knuckle clamp from column to steering box input shaft for knocking, and the shaft for play.
