Today could have gone better
« on: 05 July 2013, 23:44:11 »

I offered to run a mate to Milton Keynes to collect his recently acquired Dutton.
So, we dumped a bag of tools, lockwire, cable-ties and other stuff into the Omega, and drove round the M25 and up the M1.
Collected the car, and set off home.
After doing a couple of simple repairs on the Dutton(doing up a fuel pipe and solving the overheating by rewiring the fan so it turned the correct way), we hit the Friday afternoon traffic on the M25.
At which point, my bloody Omega decided to stop idling.
So I've got my money's worth out of the AA this year as it's been recovered home, and I'll be getting a new crank sensor tomorrow as it's fine now that it has cooled down.

Not going to buy a spare then :-\

Edit - crank sensor always seems to fail at the least convenient time. The last time it happened to me I had a spare but it was on a shelf at home  ::)

That's interesting as I have a spare.
The C/S was the spare off my hot-rod engine.

As for the fan, we've both seen the problem before. The first car was on its third engine, which could have been avoided be swapping two wires around!

Yeah. You'd think that anyone going to, say, France would have the foresight to take a spare. Have to be a retard not to really. :)

I've never bothered on the three occasions I've taken the car.
Are they really so crap that a good, new one can't be trusted? I'd expect one to be fit and forget for a lot of miles or several years. Anything else would have to go near the top of the list of bad design/manufacturing/quality control/installation.

it's easily checked; just put your hand near the radiator and ensure that air is being pulled into the engine bay.
Symptoms of it being wired wrong are overheating very soon after the car starts moving, but will idle without any problems.

Obvious indicators are aftermarket fans; hardwired ones, and dodgy looking wiring 'alterations.' This was on a recently reassembled kitcar which had done 9miles. It wasn't a difficult diagnosis, roadside repair was to cut the wires, twist the correct ones together and tape the joint. He's probably fixed it properly this morning with some solder and heatshrink.

The wire from the sensor runs very close to the exhaust manifold and becomes brittle quite quickly. It can be OK for a long time but tends to give up when stressed. A common trigger is someone carrying out major maintenance that disturbs the wire (eg cam cover gaskets or heads off). I imagine 2000 miles of French autoroutes might be another trigger.......
