Cleaning old furniture ..........
« on: 04 August 2013, 16:31:26 »

I'm cleaning an old/antique chest of bedroom drawers at the moment. It's "dark wood" and seems to be coming up nicely.

Question is, over the years an accumulation of dirt/polish has caused some parts to have a dirty, almost black residue build up on exposed horizontal surfaces such as the top edges of drawers etc.

Any ideas how to clean these off without going to all the trouble & expense of a proper French polisher?

Thanks - Rob

How clean do you want it?
If you use white spirit and wire wool, you will ruin any aging or patination.

I recommend washing up liquid + water to start,
then if you want cleaner than that, tooth brush / scrubbing brush.
but DONT use solvents, or metal tools!

try on an inconspicuous area first.
