how important is it that the correct radiator is fitted to a vehicle, or can any rad be fitted as long as the hoses fit.

Fairly I'd say, needs to match the engine, the cooling that is already there. In the case of the Omega needs to have an ATF cooler if an auto too

Very important,it's to cool the engine down,go small and could cook the engine also going to big can cause engine to run cooler than it should,stick to the size and type fitted,unless its for a modified car your building

That's what the thermostat is for

what it is , I sent for a rad to fit a scenic & when it arrived it was a bigger rad, though with adjustment to the top fixing bolts it fitted in. the car is having a water loss problem & nobody has been able to find out where from. thermostats new & its a separate cooler for the autobox. it has never overheated, also oil wise no loss there & keeps very clean.

Have you had a good look at the washer on the pressure cap? If there are any cracks then fit a new pressure cap.

Once you have a new cap fit a Schraeder valve to the old one and use it to pressure test the system

will do , as iv,e said no  " overheating " though when coolant is hot there is a significant rise & fall to be seen in the expansion tank.
